Belarusian Main page at Commons

Hello, there is a problem in links to the main page in belarusian (official orthography, be) version of WikiMedia Commons. Most links go to the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Галоўная_старонка which is reserved by the version in alternative orthography (taraškievica, be-tarask).

I'm trying to fix links to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Галоўная, but for some edits I don't have sufficient rights, and I am not sure which lines are connected to Commons at the TranslateWiki. Can you help me solve this issue? Plaga med (talk) 09:28, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

What is the message key? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:31, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
I'm trying to edit the MediaWiki:Mainpage/be to "Галоўная" for now and I don't have sufficient rights.
Note that the older version of the page's name is "Першая старонка", now it is redirect to "Галоўная" Plaga med (talk) 09:45, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
@Plaga med, what @Jon Harald Søby says is probably the best immediate solution.
Changing the Mainpage message here is restricted for several reasons:
  1. There are a lot of links to the main page on all wikis, and changing its title without proper care may break them.
  2. translatewiki is for all wikis in the world, not just the ones operated by Wikimedia. So there should be a very clear and wide consensus for changing it.
So it's possible to do it, but it must be done extra-carefully. If Commons is the only problem, I suggest just following Jon Harald's advice. If you want to change the Mainpage here, please get a consensus for it on Wikipedia, other Wikimedia wikis, and any other MediaWiki-based sites in the Belarusian language that you can find. It's difficult, but there's a reason for it. Thanks for understanding :)

@Plaga med: I believe you need to ask a Commons administrator to create commons:MediaWiki:Mainpage/be with "Галоўная" as the content. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:44, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! I'll send the request Plaga med (talk) 09:46, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Should "Special:MyLanguage/" be removed in the translations of this message? Otherwise the localized link does not seem to work as intended. I think https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Policy:Terms_of_Use/ja is intended to show the Japanese version, but it leads to https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Terms_of_Use instead. https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Terms_of_Use/ja doesn't have this problem. (EDIT: I tried Japanese and English as my browser's preferred language - the behavior didn't change either way.)

MediaWiki:Wikimedia-mobile-frontend-terms-url/qqq says "Replace Terms_of_Use in the URL with Terms_of_Use/<your_language>, for example, Terms_of_Use/fr for French." and translators seem to have taken this as retaining "Special:MyLanguage/". whym 08:06, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Same for MediaWiki:Wikimedia-copyright/qqq, MediaWiki:Wikimedia-copyrightwarning/qqq, MediaWiki:Wikidata-copyright/qqq and MediaWiki:Wikimedia-oauth-privacy-link/qqq. If you follow the instructions, you will end up having "Special:MyLanguage/.../<lang code>", which does not seem to work as intended. whym 12:05, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
@Whym: Well, what's happened in these instances is that there used to be the plain URL (i.e. without Special:MyLanguage), but then the original (English) was changed to include Special:MyLanguage, and whoever imported the new version of the message changed the existing URLs in translations, which led to Special:MyLanguage/…/<langcode>. In these instances I think the instructions should be updated to no longer tell translators to change the URL in translations manually.
However, I'm a bit ambivalent about Special:MyLanguage links on foundation.wikimedia.org. Special:MyLanguage works by using the interface language, but since foundationwiki has been a closed wiki for a long time, I don't think a lot of people have set their interface language to something other than English there (unless they've set it with Global preferences, but those are quite well-hidden and unknown), meaning that these links will all go to the English version in practice. So maybe instead of using Special:MyLanguage/…/<langcode>, we should change the instructions to say Special:MyLanguage/…?uselang=<langcode> instead? That way the users will be redirected to the translation in their language if it exists, and the English version if it doesn't. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:21, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for the insight. How recent was the change ("there used to be the plain URL (i.e. without Special:MyLanguage)")? I don't doubt that something like that happened, but it looks like one instruction has been written that way since 2014. 9 years seem like a little too long time for nobody to notice the problem, and I'm a little confused. But regardless of my confusion, the last suggestion (?uselang=<langcode> replacing /<langcode>) seems like a good idea. whym 08:10, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
@Whym: The change happened on March 10, so it's quite recent. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:44, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
But the one I linked above[1] was in 2014. I guess similar changes happened multiple times, both in one direction and in reverse, over the years? whym 08:26, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

English source text on MediaWiki:Sessionfailure/co

I stumbled across this message that was created with the English source text. How should these be handled? Do I mark them for deletion, or just report them here? Mainframe98 talk 11:39, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

@Mainframe98: Yeah, you can just mark it with {{delete}} (I've deleted this particular one now). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:46, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Can't open the page Portal:Fr, it says "Oops, It looks like our backend is currently unable to process your request. Please try again later." Thibaut (talk) 15:44, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

@Thibaut120094: Can you check now? The page had a huge section linking to other languages, using a very resource-intensive template. I commented out that section for now. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:00, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. We have had an increase in timeouts, mainly for Portal:Fr and ISO_15924. Would be great to avoid that log spam. Nike (talk) 08:03, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
It works now, thanks! Thibaut (talk) 08:33, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Marking messages as "identical" or "translation not needed"

This is my idea, add option for translators to mark messages for example "translation not needed" or "identical to the source" to avoid going over and over again over the same messages or making duplicats so they dont show up as "not translated"

Regards Milićević (talk) 19:35, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Can you give an example for such a message? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:23, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
First hand examples
Milićević (talk) 12:41, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
They should just be optional. I'll make a patch. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 13:04, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
Works for me; personaly i would like to see check box for marking message and group Optional just like Untranslated, Outdated and etc. Milićević (talk) 18:23, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

Please change it to "Watangpola" as it is in w:bug: currently. Thanks. Bennylin (talk) 14:42, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi!
Was there any discussion about it among speakers of that language?
That message is protected because it's particularly notable and can break things if it's changed incorrectly. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:12, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
There was, but it was offline and not recorded. The note of the said event was here: https://id.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM_2022/Dokumentasi_aktivitas#20_Agustus:_Diskusi_dan_menyunting_dengan_komunitas_Wikipedia_bahasa_Bugis_dan_Makassar Notably, the community member involved was Umda, Hasma, and Pak Roni. Thanks. Bennylin (talk) 06:00, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
OK, I'll check it. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 06:52, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

Default branch name change for lib.reviews: master->main

I've changed the default GitHub branch name for the lib.reviews project from "master" to "main". Please let me know if any change is needed to the repo config here for this to work with the translatewiki.net configuration. Looking at repoconfig.yaml, it looks like no branch is currently specified, so I'm hoping it will just use the default branch. Eloquence (talk) 04:13, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Eloquence! My naïve guess is that we do need to specify branch: main in the lib.reviews section of repoconfig.yaml, but @Raymond understands that file much better than I do. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:29, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
@Eloquence I think Amir is right. But I maintain MediaWiki Core/extensions master only Raymond 07:42, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
OK :)
@Abijeet Patro, can you please check https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/translatewiki/+/940340 ? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 11:33, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
Merged, and deployed. Abijeet Patro (talk) 17:09, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

I requested speedy deletion, but I don't see it in the category, so posting here as well. Since MediaWiki:Graph-disabled/qqq says it shouldn't be translated, the translation here is not needed. Mbch331 (talk) 16:03, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

@El-hussain14: I added a patch for it here. But should there be any fallback languages, languages that may help you when translating? Perhaps Hausa? And maybe Igbo and Yoruba? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:20, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes, Hausa and English languages. El-hussain14 (talk) 06:35, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
@El-hussain14: Thank you! The patch has been merged, so the language will be available when it is deployed (probably later today). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:55, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
