Votic translations

Hi. I've been looking at the Votic Wikipedia and Translatewiki for the past few days, and I've noticed something worrying: all of the main editors here (Paivud, Andrijko Z., Aig mest ei varasta, 2Q) have also been some of the main contributors on the Votic test wiki on Wikimedia Incubator back in the day, which was confirmed to have dubious quality (proof shown here: https://incubator.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Tamara_Ustinova). Knowing this, plus the fact that none of the contributors seem to even know Votic (some claim to, but it's doubtful knowing the context), the translations here almost definitely contain severe language inaccuracies, which means that all of the Votic translations here should be deleted, considering the very low chance for proficient speaker contributers to come and fix the situation, and the fact that all of this would need to be retranslated anyway. @Jon Harald Søby Hi again, and sorry for nagging, but I simply don't want this message to be ignored. This is a serious request, and it shouldn't just be tossed to the side. Please respond to this as soon as you are able to.
Thank you, and sorry for the possible disturbance. John k. (talk) 16:27, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi @John k.! Sorry, I'm not actively ignoring it, I'm just not quite sure how to proceed yet. But yes, it is clear something should be done. I just deleted a bunch of incorrect translations into Southern Sámi from many years ago, and would be willing to do the same for other languages too. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 23:15, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby Yeah, I think that mass-deleting all of the translations is currently the best way out, as none of them seem to be made by proficient speakers, plus it's really hard to get proficient speakers to fix it, and considering all of the content would need to be retranslated anyway (incorrect language, plus half of the translations also being outdated) there's no real downside to it either. It's unfortunate, but I think it's the best thing to do. Please let me know whenever you have made a decision. John k. (talk) 05:19, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby Sorry again for nagging, I just want to remind you that I have made my vision clear on the issue. Considering that you seem willing to delete inaccurate translations, I trust the fact that you'll be able to work with me on this issue. Thanks and sorry again for disturbing. John k. (talk) 18:15, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@John k.: No worries. The main issue for me is whether or not some of the translators are ok, or if they're all garbage. For instance, for Southern Sámi, there were some good native-language translators, so I had to make sure not to delete their contributions, while deleting contributions by the main offending contributor.
You've talked about the main editors (first post above), but how about any non-main editors who might actually have made good contributions? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:35, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby Well, these four editors seem to have made 99% of the translations. I've checked the rest, and they don't seem any more trustworthy, since they were made around the same time and by similar-looking people, so I don't think it's worth it to keep any of them. Of course, I get the worry, but I don't feel like any of these editors are trustworthy enough. Again, let me know when you've made your decision on this matter. John k. (talk) 15:40, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@John k.: Makes sense. I'll consult with some of the other TWN administrators, and then we'll probably delete it all. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:42, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Alright, thanks! John k. (talk) 15:43, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby Hello, I know you've been busy recently, but I just wanted to check in on how this matter is progressing. John k. (talk) 21:37, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby I apologise for being pushy again. It has been a while since this initial proposal, and I know you've most likely been very busy during all this time, but it would be good to have an update on the situation. John k. (talk) 12:48, 12 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@John k.: We will get to it, but it is IMO not very urgent, given that these translations have already been present for a number of years. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:05, 12 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Alright, good to know. It's good that you will at least be getting to it. John k. (talk) 13:15, 12 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@John k.: All translations into Votic have been deleted now. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:36, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jon Harald Søby Thank you for your help! One last fairly minor curiosity: I still see some of the translations on the language portal page, for example. I assume they'll eventually change? I'm not very familiar with TW, sorry. John k. (talk) 16:11, 9 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@John k.: Yes, it takes some time for the deletions to propagate, but they should disappear after a little while. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:03, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I would say to just junk all of them. It would be ofc possible to ask some Votic experts to assess some of the translations first (I'll send you e-mail Jon), but from what I've seen of these users (and some others), their translations are not worth saving and are likely actually causing harm outside of MediaWiki too since many other places reuse MW translations. The Votic incubator project was deemed garbage already back in 2014 by an expert, so the TW translations are likely of the same caliber. - Yupik (talk) 18:02, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Meänkieli translations

Hey. You deleted the contributions from User:Palmtree222 a couple weeks ago. It also appears that User:Meänmaa2 is his alternate account he has used to do these Meänkieli translations, so you should probably delete translations made by that account too.

It would also probably be a good thing to take a look at the contributions of this person on Wp/fit and other incubator wikis, but that's probably another discussion that should be held further somewhere else. I don't know enough about the exact situation, so I can't 100% advocate for any action currently, but considering the nature of this person, it would be very important to look at their edits and do something about them. Thanks in advance for everything. Kampalafan (talk) 13:31, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Kampalafan: Thanks. I've blocked that user and deleted their contributions. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 17:36, 25 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Formal

Note that the language code de (in which I always translate) does not need a formal switch! It is basically the informal version! The formal version listens to the language code de-formal! Therefore, please revert your edits on my translations yourself! As a administrator and bureaucrat, you should know this! Justman10000 (talk) 09:33, 31 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Justman10000: Hello, it seems you have missed the most recent development. See Support#New feature for (in)formal language variants. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:42, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Usage of #FORMAL has indeed some flaws when called from JS as it's not supported there. IW 05:52, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Inkowik: Indeed. I am working on it. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:27, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's not what I meant! It is simply absolutely unnecessary! And i am still not going to correct every translation I do, just to put that damn #FORMAL in there Justman10000 (talk) 08:20, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Justman10000: Nobody asked you specifically to do it. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:14, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but why implement this function if one doesn't have to use it? Justman10000 (talk) 14:18, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Problem with British English translations

Hi! I noticed that in my British English wiki in Miraheze, some of the MediaWiki messages appear in other language even when they appear unchanged, with no history. Specifically, MediaWiki:Filehist-help/en-gb and MediaWiki:Editundo/en-gb, for example, appear in Nupe language, which. Is there a way to fix this? Maybe creating the en-gb message pages again? danniel (talk) 03:57, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Danniel07! The problem is already solved on the Translatewiki/MediaWiki side because the messages in the incorrect languages no longer appear in the Git repository. So the ideal solution would be for Miraheze to update their MediaWiki version, but I know that's easier said than done. As a temporary workaround, I would suggest that you create those messages (in British English) locally on your wiki to override them. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:30, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Will do then, thanks! danniel (talk) 15:44, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
