The message is empty in the English source. As we do not have a "problematic blacklist" yet, you'll have to live with that for now... Siebrand 13:49, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Search in MediaWiki namespace

The MediaWiki namespace should be probably searched by default, as that is the most obvious and convenient way to find out the name of a message. --Tgr 00:24, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Done Done The other namespaces containing translations should also have search by default. I think this setting does not work for users that already have an account - or changed their search settings. You can set the namespaces in Special:Preferences. Cheers! Siebrand 18:18, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Filtering fuzzied messages

Is it possible to search for fuzzied messages only? Currently, the message filter only allows for problematic messages. Thanks, Malafaya 15:10, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

FUZZY shows up as untranslated. "problematic" contains messages that fail to pass a few particular tests - they are hardly related. Siebrand 18:09, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, just looking for FUZZY in all the untranslated messages is quite cumbersome. Malafaya 19:03, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
If you have a lot of untranslated, the few fuzzys in there are not that relevant. Just work from the top in any category you are targeting. When you have translated everything, you will also have come across the fuzzys. :) Siebrand 19:43, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
I knew you would say something like that :)). I like to unfuzzy cause the messages involved are usually easier ;). I was indinrectly trying to convince you guys to create a special "Fuzzied messages" filter on RC. Thanks anyway. :) --Malafaya 21:23, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Some changed messages

The following messages have a definition in 1.12 branch different from the definition in trunk (1.14):

  • Badaccess-groups (“The action you have requested is limited to users in {{PLURAL:$2|the group|one of the groups}}: $1.”)
  • Readonlywarning (“<strong>Warning: The database has been locked for maintenance, so you will not be able to publish your edits right now.</strong> You may wish to copy and paste your text into a text file and save it for later.
The system administrator who locked it offered this explanation: $1

  • Userstatstext (“There {{PLURAL:$1|is '''1''' registered [[Special:ListUsers|user]]|are '''$1''' registered [[Special:ListUsers|users]]}}, of which '''$2''' (or '''$4%''') {{PLURAL:$2|has|have}} $5 rights. • Anonymous (“Anonymous {{PLURAL:$1|user|users}} of {{SITENAME}}”)
  • Siteusers (“{{SITENAME}} {{PLURAL:$2|{{GENDER:$1|user}}|users}} $1”)
  • Category-media-count

This is mostly because of the newly added PLURAL support. They are listed as problematic because of this. A separate message for localization of 1.12 definition should be created for every one of them. --Meno25 20:08, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Translations into Lombard: could be more languages be dislapyed, please?

Sirs, I am now working at the translation of the wiki interface to the Lombard language. At present, when translating messages, English ones of course do appear; sometimes translations into Italian are also displayed; unfortunately, this is rather unuseful to me, so I kindly ask translations in the following languages to be displayed as well, when available:

  • French
  • Occitan
  • Catalan.

This could help me much more. Thank you very much, --Sprüngli 16:24, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Ethnologue tells me: "Speakers may all be adequately bilingual in Standard Italian."[1] If that is utterly wrong, can you please tell me why? Siebrand 21:03, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
I added the languages from the same family[2] as alternative fall backs. Siebrand 21:06, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
$wgTranslateLanguageFallbacks['lmo'] = array( 'pms', 'eml', 'lij', 'vec' );
Hi! That's not "utterly wrong" indeed: on the contrary, the statement you have quoted is essentially correct. Lombard speakers are in most cases bilingual speakers and do speak Italian. Exceptions: people whose parents migrated in other regions of Switzerland (or abroad), who could have learnt other languages. So Italian should be kept, because it could be useful to other people. My case is as above. Thank you. Bests, --81.208.125.60 15:47, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Fallback not working in some messages for Mantis

Fallback does not work in some messages for Mantis. For example when editing this message in Egyptian Arabic (arz), it should have this message in Arabic (ar) as fallback which is not the case. This seems to be another problem in the 100 messages that have slashes and backslashes in their titles. (If they are causing all these problems why not just rename them?) --Meno25 12:05, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Fall back only works for messages in files as I am told. So if the work has not yet been committed, the fallback does not yet work. Siebrand 16:23, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Second sentence is not bold. It should be: '''Remember that you are only previewing your user CSS.''' '''It has not yet been saved!'''

Fallback language (Dutch) translations no longer displayed on edit pane (West Frisian)

Hi, folks. The last time I was here, the translation tool gave me the Dutch translation as well as the English when editing or creating a (West) Frisian message. But not today. I'm far from fluent in the language, so I relied heavily on the close similarity between the two.

I have no clue how I broke it. How do I fix it? Thanks! Snakesteuben 16:15, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Please provide an edit URL for all cases that fail, and describe expected behaviour for all those cases. One case per localisation will do. After that, we will fix it. Cheers! Siebrand 16:18, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Siebrand. Here's an example MediaWiki:Watchlistedit-raw-submit/fy. I last edited that particular message on 30 August, so I know the feature was present then for that page in particular.
Expected behaviour: In this case the text displayed would be:
Volglijst bijwerken, the text currently contained in MediaWiki:Watchlistedit-raw-submit/nl.
Which would appear above the English translation (Update Watchlist) and the current Frysk translation (Folchlist bewurkje). I think that part of the screen had a header of, I don't remember exactly, something like "Other languages: Dutch."
I've looked at a few dozen pages, and I don't see any that still give me that help text. I'm pretty sure the whole editing interface has changed, not just individual pages.
Thanks, Snakesteuben 16:41, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
According to Ethnologue most people that speak West Frisian also speak Dutch. One time 'fy' also had a fall back to 'nl', but I got a request to revert this (I think it was more a political issue than based on reality). As far as I know we have not had a Dutch fallback for West Frisian up to this request. However: configured with the advice to make a fallback to Dutch standard in the messages file. Cheers! Localization of namespaces on MT.Wiki

Hi, some namespaces were recently localized on mt.wiki - among them the category namespace. Apparently some namespaces and wikilinks were translated batchwise others not which leaves a considerable bunch of broken category links. Can anybody here tell me exactly how you handled the process so that I'll figure out how best to fix the remaining broken links? Thanks --Joelemaltais 20:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

There have not been any changes to namespaces in MessagesMt.php since at least 7 January 2007. 'mt' does not even have localisation of namespace, so falls back to English. If MessagesMt.php were to get namespace localisation, the English namespace names would still work, and nothing would be broken. In essence, I have no idea what you are talking about. If it was not the former, please elaborate and link to at least 2 examples. Siebrand 10:36, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi, I'm very sorry Siebrand I hurried to the wrong conclusion without looking at things in detail. I had been looking at a category catalogue which makes use of this template http://mt.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Urikategorija&action=history . A user had modified it without really grasping the consequences: everything using it broken :|
Nonetheless once we're on that topic; localization of Namespaces was the initial reason why we came here (cf. 1, 2) Since that hint in the 2nd reference, the community (= 2 users + the other admin - we're a small wiki) started localizing via Beta. In the course of the last two months a consensus has been reached on a number of Maltese terms - among them the namespaces. I'm not clear about the process of checking out via beta. Some terms are automatically checked out while others apparently have to be formaly requested - of course after consensus is reached on the local wiki. I had left a related message on meta ..to no avail - I probably asked on the wrong wiki. Could you explain or point out information regarding the process - a) what is checked out automatically b) what has to be formally requested c) your need and form of eividence that a consensus on a local wiki has been reached before processing a formal request. For any hint I'd be grateful. Tot ziens, --Joelemaltais 21:12, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
Commits on all changes through Special:Magic, with the exception of special page aliases for extensions, are not made without a request. For an initial commit of namespace names, no cnsensus is required. When namespaces already exist, it may be needed. You can request the changes made through Magic to be committed on Translating:Tasks. Siebrand 23:20, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

km wiki shows very large editing screen

Hello, I am Khmer User. On The Khmer Wiki (kmwiki, kmwikibooks, kmwiktionary) shows very large editing screen when click [edit] link. I see other wikis show the editing windows in normal width and height that make us easy to editing page. But Khmer Wiki shows very large that make us uneasy. Could someone help fix this error? --lovekhmer 08:56, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Check your user preferences. It is possible to change the size of the edit area there. – Nike 09:29, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
But there is no user preference for unregistered account. It also show large screen. When wiki is installed with km Interface, It always show large screen in Mozilla. I want the editing screen comes normal as other wikis. What is it problem with this? --lovekhmer 10:01, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
This has likely to do with font settings for the Khmer font. With some East Asian and Indic scripts, I experienced similar (both overly large, and very tiny) letters, and derived sizes. Provided my guess is right, and provided, every user is very likely using the same font files that you are using, you have a good chance fixing this via Common.css (“/* CSS placed here will be applied to all skins */”) by adjusting the font-size and/or line-height properties of body, or one of the major container classes of pages. However, I doubt that this situation exists. When I open an edit page on the Kambodian Wikipedia, not logged in, I see lines about 1.4 to 1.5 the height of those at translatewiki.net, and an approprialely high edit field, which is imho very acceptable at my screen resolution. I am pretty certain, that I am using either the Khmer font recommended at the km wiki, or one that came with some other Indic or East Asian font file recommended in another Wikipedia. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:32, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Language names

Where do I translate the names of languages? --פוילישער 16:46, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

You cannot. They come from an external module. Also see Todo, first item. Siebrand 17:03, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
That creates the ridiculous situation in the yi interface that the languages are in neither English nor Yiddish! --פוילישער 18:44, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Que? We decided that we do not want 7500 language names up for translation, so if you really want them in Yiddish, please provide them to the CLDR project. We at least provide language names in English, and where CLDR does not have them, we provide them. Siebrand 21:25, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Please, can you change everywhere in this site the language name: Pontic to the local name who is Ποντιακά? Cheers! --Consta 15:23, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Please clarify. Siebrand 20:19, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Please add Danish (da) as fallback to swedish. Najami 06:34, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

You probably mean that you want it in the in other languages section and not as a real fallback? BTW, we should probably add some terms to FAQ or somewhere else. – Nike 07:50, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I mean it! Najami 09:16, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
As far as I can see this setting is already present. Siebrand 10:01, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
$wgTranslateLanguageFallbacks['sv'] = array( 'da', 'no', 'nn' ); # Siebrand 2008-03-23
Najami is translating FreecCol, and for those messages Danish translations are not shown, only Norwegian is shown as "other languages". Translations for MediaWiki messages are diplayed correctly according to the the settings. /Lejonel 20:51, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Fallbacks are only displayed if a translation is actually present, so I guess no Danish translation is present. Siebrand 21:23, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
The Danish FreeCol translation looks almost complete. Here is an example of a Swedish translation were the Danish translation is not shown. /Lejonel 14:56, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Correction: Translation fallbacks in the Translate extension are only displayed if a translation is present in file, so I guess no Danish translation has been committed yet. Siebrand 22:25, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Currentrev-asof/qu

MediaWiki:Currentrev-asof/qu does not work on Quechua wikipedia, see [3]. (or if it is no more the last diff, see last diff). There is shown:

última version al 12:16 16 sit 2008 (llamk'apuy) (kutichiy)

instead of:

Kunan musuqchasqa, $12:16 16 sit 2008 pacha (llamk'apuy) (kutichiy)

I absolutely do not understand, why. Nothing is marked as "fuzzy". Thanks for help. -- AlimanRuna 13:24, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

I can only assume that the local page MediaWiki:Currentrev-asof exists on qu.wp, which would override the generic localisation... Siebrand 15:14, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Or maybe you just forgot to read FAQ item 1... Wikimedia has not updated software in the past 2 weeks. Siebrand 15:28, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, of course I looked if the page exists on qu-WP, and I saw it never did. But you're right, I had forgotten that I had created the page only same days before (5 sep 2008). So it has not been implemented yet. Thanks for your last hint. :) -- AlimanRuna 18:28, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Fuzzy message translations: 2 kinds of "FUZZY"

At the moment (if I'm right) instead of all translations marked as "fuzzy" the English or the fallback versions, respectively, are diplayed automatically. Isn't it possible to change this? Mostly, the changes are only minor, and so it is more suitable for a wiki user to see the message in an older translation than in the fallback language, e.g. if only the singular/plural form is missing. I think it would be better to have the possibility to mark just the translation with essential changes as "not to show". Let's say, one mark would be "!!!FUZZY" (original translation still to be displayed), the other one "!!!!!!FUZZY" (with 6 "!") for changes where the original translation would be wrong and therefore has to be hidden. -- AlimanRuna 13:35, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Fuzzy is fuzzy. You need to review the translation. No different forms in there. Siebrand 15:10, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
That's not correct. MediaWiki uses the fuzzy strings because we export them, just without the tag. This may not hold true for all projects (mainly those using Gettext) – Nike 08:13, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

robots.txt on Wikimedia server

Per this posting on wikitech-l we can define a MediaWiki:Robots.txt per Wikimedia project. So we should add this new message to the "Wikimedia messages" extension. I would do it by myself but I cannot commit this week. Raymond 20:16, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Hmm. I think adding a default and setting that to ignored is probably a better way. We wouldn't want this message to be tampered with outside of the project, I guess. Other thoughts? Siebrand 20:29, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it can be set to ignored. My idea is by adding this message to the extension it will be shown in Special:Allmessages. Raymond 20:41, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Missing extensions

Makebot/Makesysop are obsolete. I have added OpenSearch. Siebrand 09:27, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Sure they are; yet, they are used on Wikimedia wikis… (So, e.g. wikipedia:cs:Special:Version shows English text, because MediaWiki:Makebot-desc and MediaWiki:Makesysop-desc are not translated…) OK, thanks anyway. --Mormegil 10:01, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
While they are being used, imho, we should be keeping translations updated, or add missing ones, despite they're being obsolete. --Purodha Blissenbach 10:38, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
The executive descision is to not support obsolete functionality... Siebrand 12:42, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
That means,
  • we can translate it in svn directly, but only in the past MW versions that still have it, if we want a central place, or
  • wiki admins must translate locally.
Right? --Purodha Blissenbach 17:16, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Pushing WMF admins harder to get rid of the extensions sounds like a better plan. Siebrand 17:55, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Alias for Special:DeletedContributions

Yesterday I tried adding a Swedish alias for Special:DeletedContributions. But the only thing that happened was that aliases for the removed specialpage Special:Missingfiles were removed (diff). Globalblocking-whitelist-dewhitelisted (“You have re-enabled the global block #$2 on the user '''$1''' on {{SITENAME}}.”)

It is a local action. I see no need to change. The message is accurate. Siebrand 10:26, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Plural for Alabama language

What must I do? Alabama language does not have plural. Must I do like { { PLURAL:$$|láhwa|láhwa } }? --Ulohnanne 16:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Partially, I'm doing the same thing in Quechua, where the plural forms are optional, and it works. -- AlimanRuna 18:32, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
{{PLURAL:$#|baa}} is the shortest one, if you want to suppress the check and your language needs plural in some cases. – Nike 08:11, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Alabama simply does not have plural, so I can't use it. I can make some plural up, but that won't be good. I will see what I can do. --Ulohnanne 16:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

MediaWiki messages

We have MediaWiki messages and then MediaWiki messages (1.12) and (1.13). Are the MediaWiki messages overall and the other (1.12/1.13) specific to the wiki versions? Or does MediaWiki messages also contain the messages of 1.12 and 1.13? --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 21:46, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

MediaWiki messages 1.12 and 1.13 are specific to those branches/versions of MediaWiki. Those are called "stable" versions. Once in a while, a language pack is released for these stable versions (see FAQ#Update_of_.22stable_version.22_localisations), and translations are retrieved from those groups (1.12, 1.13, and others in the future) in Betawiki to create them. Plain MediaWiki messages group (without a version) contains the development version of messages. That's why you observe additions and changes to these messages frequently. MediaWiki messages 1.12 and 1.13 are supposed to be stable in that there are no added or deleted messages; just new translations are added. I hope this helps, Malafaya 22:28, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
In what order do the messages appear? --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 02:29, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Protection logs not italicised

I don't know if anyone here uses the SVN version of MediaWiki, but the protection logs haven't been italicised, unlike the block, upload or deletion log reasons. Thanks, --Sunstar NW XP 10:26, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

P.s. please create a user page! Siebrand 18:51, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

I think this is what the user above is referring to:

  • 17:52, 25 September 2008 Raymond (Talk | contribs) protected "User:Raymond/test2a" [edit=sysop] (indefinite) [move=sysop] (indefinite) ‎ (test) (hist)

11:49, 16 September 2008 Raymond (Talk | contribs) protected "User:Raymond/test" [edit=autoconfirmed] (expires 11:49, 16 September 2010 (UTC)) [move=autoconfirmed] (expires 11:49, 16 September 2010 (UTC)) ‎ (hist) 14:44, 11 August 2008 Meno25 (Talk | contribs) protected "User talk:Innv" ‎ ([edit=autoconfirmed:move=autoconfirmed]) (hist)

He's probably saying that the logs should be consistent in the reason field being italicised or not - which I suppose is a valid point, ensuring consistency in the software. A small bug, stylistic, maybe, but should be fixed. --Aschelm 08:44, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

You could install Translate, create a few scripts, run the stats yourself and upload the results to Betawiki... Possibly even better: upload the stats to a sub page for the extension documentation on MediaWiki.org. Siebrand 10:52, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Strange e-mail messages.

  1. I have received a series of 15 e-mails created between 16:12 and 16.48 of Septembre, 30th. They all look like automated notifications of translatewiki.net about page creations or page changes, e.g.:
The Betawiki page Support has been created on 16:12, 30 September 2008 by Romashevich, see http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support for the current version.
Yet apparently, the messages are bogus, mentioned pages either do not exist, or exist since long, and thus were not created today.
In case you want to know more details, let me know.
  2. e-mails including urls with colons inside are not rendered correctly as links by the webmailer I was using to read these message. Thus I suggest to generally urlencode colons in the urls put in e-mails. Thank you. --Purodha Blissenbach 15:49, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Moverootuserpagesnotallowed (“You do not have permission to move root user pages.”) unnecessarily uses {{SITENAME}} which may inevitably cause wrong grammar in some languages, depending on the name of the site.

The message also refers to "root user pages" which is ambiguous to me (pages of users of group "root", or an extra type of the user pages that we all have?), and up to now undescribed. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:10, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Change other language messages

When I edit a message there are the messages in the languages defined as translate fallback. And after that follows the qqq localization, which is the description of the message. There is an edit link in parentheses to edit the description. Sometimes I want to change the messages in my translate fallback languages too (for example fuzzied messages). So it would be great, if the language code, which is displayed in parentheses, could be changed into an edit link for that message. --::Slomox:: >< 13:33, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Babel, the 3rd (toki pona)

How can I add Babel texts in Tokipona? We have two choices of codes, tokipona, and tp, in the selector dropdown, but both say, they cannot be used. While localizing interface message and the like may not be a good idea for languages not supported in translatewiki.net, creating Babel boxes for such languages is necessary, even do not (yet) have ISO codes. --Purodha Blissenbach 13:00, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Babel does not support languages with non-valid language codes. If those need support, they should be created locally using the Template:User_xx method. Babel does support the other 7700 or so valid language codes. Siebrand 18:26, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Duplicator-toomanyrevisions

Duplicator-toomanyrevisions (“[[$1]] has too many ($2) revisions and cannot be copied. The current limit is $3.”) needs PLURAL in several translations, though the current wording of the original does not. --Purodha Blissenbach 14:37, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Please make a suggestion, so a coder can actually implement it. Your current comment is too vague to act upon. Siebrand 10:12, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
This is merely informative. There is no action required, as long as the condition "Translation uses PLURAL while English does not" does not trigger a Warning. That is as it is now. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:26, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
The problem is that if English doesn't use plural, there is no guarantee that plural works in that message at all. – Nike 09:43, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
How could that be? PLURAL implementations come with the language, so, as long as there is no need for an additional variable, such as a count of items in a list, etc., what could possibly go wrong? --Purodha Blissenbach 18:56, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
I was talking about {{PLURAL}}. – Nike 05:36, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Maybe, I do not understand. Does the piece of software using a message need to be aware of the fact, that {{PLURAL|…}} might be inside the message, else the appropriate rendering function for PLURAL may possibly not be called? If so, then indeed, a coder must make sure that it is called. Unfortunately, I do not have a wiki available where I could test this message :-( so I would not know … --Purodha Blissenbach 07:58, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, plural must be explicitely supported in the code. Siebrand 22:22, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

History-search (“Search in history”) is a filedset legend on top of history page, and its current value "Search in history" is kind of misleading, as that form doesn't really search anything (as opposed to some tools that can actually search text in old revisions). The message should say "Show history" or "Show revisions". - AlexSm 15:18, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

Done Done Renamed message to History-fieldset-title (“Filter revisions”) and content to "Browse history". Siebrand 20:28, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Template:Flagged Revs

Template:Flagged Revs creates a pretty garbled blue field in Opera 9.26 (Win32) — there are some links on top of each other, not readable, towards the upper right, and the 2nd line of text is crossed by the lower border line in its middle. At a first quick glance, I was not able to find out what is causing the mess. I guess some CSS + JavaScript magic is. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:14, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Ok, now I got you. Yes, I inspected the template already in order to fix it. Unfortunately, my first try did not give me a clue :-( I am afraid that, one must find the corresponding CSS and likely some JavaScript dealing with it, both of which are not part of the template. I am not an expert in those things :-(

If I go to it in Opera 9.10 (also Win32), it displays normally. Which skin do you use? SPQRobin 19:22, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Monobook. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:14, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I tried a few others, (modern, chick, cologneblue) basically all the same. Strange: all cologneblue pages have <!-- --> in their upper left. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:26, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
<!-- --> in cologneblue skin is because of MediaWiki:Sitesubtitle/ksh. /Lejonel 18:37, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
IE 5.x gets the box right, but it is yellow, not blue. It also has text on top of each other in the upper right corner.
Opera 9.1 also has a yellow box, but it does not align correctly, when it starts off with more the 1 line - Line 2 and follwing are placed below the box. Depending on window size, it has a [show x] or [hide x] totally or partially overlapping the right end of line 1. When you click "show" and the 1st line is wrapped, the new text overwrites the lower half of the 2nd and following lines of the wrapped part, and the yellow box is properly expanded to the lower end of the new text, but not far enough, were the text itself not mispositioned. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:39, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
In other words, it appears to me that:
  1. the actual height (which may be several line heights) of the constant 1st text part is not taken into account, and
  2. the width needed for the "show" and "hide" links plus proper margin must be subtracted from the width available for the 1st line (and maybe 2nd line) the constant 1st text part.
--Purodha Blissenbach 09:47, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I tried fixing this with this edit. I changed the height for the text and added an empty floating span to push the text away from the show button. But maybe the real problem is in the css for the navigation boxes. /Lejonel 18:37, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Transclusions of MediaWiki message

Transclusions of MediaWiki message, for example, such as Centralauth-incomplete-text (“Once your login is unified, you will be able to log in to any wiki site of {{int:Centralauth-groupname}} without creating a new account”), should be replaced by int (from {{MediaWiki:ABCD}} to {{int:ABCD}}) for i18n support. --Ficell 11:03, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

That is incorrect. The default value for MediaWiki:Centralauth-groupname is 'the Wikimedia Foundation', which isn't true in a localisation if it has been changed in wgLang. Which is why MediaWiki: is used, instead of int:. Siebrand 11:17, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Babel, the 2nd

It appears to me that, some messages of the Extension:Babel do not appear in the list of tranlatable messages here, although the base messages themselves exist, such as Babel-category-prefix (page does not exist) and Babel-category-suffix (page does not exist) and Babel-url (“Project:Babel”) and Babel-footer (“Users by language”) and several others.

Unrelated, but the reason why I stumbled over it, it is imho impossible to get the Babel category names of the Asturian, Spanish, Euskara, Extremadurian, Ripuarian, and Portuguese Wikipedias built with a simple prefix+language-code+level-code+postfix logic. --Purodha Blissenbach 11:36, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Some Babel messages are ignored, because they *should not be localised*, but only configured locally. Those are forced to not be localisable ("ignored"). Others are only useful for certain languages to localise (male/female/native) so are optional.
Then the extension cannot be used for that language, unless they redesign their category system. Siebrand 18:24, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
LOL — I'd rather redesign (or upgrade) the extension than forcing a new category system on those wikis :-) I have already made a system that finds all categories of all Wikipedias for allmost all language codes (ISO 639-1, ISO 639-2B, ISO 639-2T, ISO 639-3, and WMF invented) that we use somewhere, so it's not that hard to extend the extension.
Is there a reason why messages *should not be localized*? It appears very strange to me that, e.g. "Find users by language" must be translated each time the extension is installed in a wiki rather than once for all. --Purodha Blissenbach 21:15, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
You should ask the extension author. Siebrand 08:38, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Purodha added PLURAL to it, but I reverted it because it isn't needed: we will never have only "one" translator here on Betawiki. SPQRobin 23:43, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
PLURAL is a means of getting the gramar right, it is not related to one/several as it is in English. Think of English 1st/2nd/3rd/4th if you think of PLURAL. Also, sentences should be correct even when counts are broken (i.e. arbitrarily wrong) — as always in software development, one SHOULD never assume anything, unless one MUST. In this case, there is no reason to make assumptions, so one does not.
When the extension for translating MediaWiki is installed elsewhere (I know at least one Wiki that will do that soon), they will start with no translators at all. Unless they never have one, there will be a time when they have exactly one. Bad luck for them, since translatewiki.net is already beyond that? Thats stupid. --Purodha Blissenbach 00:22, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
"bw*" messages are local messages. They are not part of an extension. Hence, the 'external' argument is invalid. Nevertheless, as Niklas mentioned, PLURAL can be used. Siebrand 08:36, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

First off, I removed everything that did not change. Second: Italic, if used, should be used as '', and not as HTML markup. Third: you invented two new messages: why? Last: this markup should probably be in the code, not in the message. Siebrand 17:29, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Identical messages detection

Based on Code Review extension experience, I think will be good idea to automate identical messages detection. We need a script which build frequency table of all messages (omitting trailing colons, dots, etc) and update Template:Identical subpages and messages documentation accordingly. Revision, Date, Diff messages looks quite usual for MediaWiki, but we still doesn't detect them as identical. --EugeneZelenko 15:09, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

How to get lfn-cyrl?

Currently, Lingua Franka Nova is only available in Latn script. So as to get to lfn-Cyrl, which is a straight 1:1 transliteration, we can:

  1. run MessagesLfn.php through a transliteration script, and commit another file,
  2. generate lfn-Cyrl from lfn-Latn message on the fly whenever Cyrillic messages are needed.

I tend to choice one. What do you think? --Purodha Blissenbach 13:06, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

I had a recent conversation with the LFN guys about that issue. Apparently, Latin is the sole official alphabet. Others can be used but their use is not advised. Malafaya 15:09, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
The Wikipedia article still claims otherwise. You may want to resolve that... Siebrand 15:52, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, if it can cheaply enough had, which I assume, I'd still not oppose making lfn-Cyrl. I am pretty convinced, it would have some users in the predominantly Cyrllic writing areas of the earth. --Purodha Blissenbach 01:11, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Image/File namespace

How old localized name will be kept to don't break existing links? --EugeneZelenko 14:04, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

No answer (sorry), but additional question on the same topic. I just updated nds localization from image to file. Am I right, that File will be the namespace name, but Image still will be the normal standard way to include images in articles? If changing the namespace name to File will mean, that in the future images will be included by the prefix File, please don't commit my change to nds and revert it. --::Slomox:: >< 14:27, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Don't we need a magic word or something for "image", to keep our old links to images and image description pages un-broken? --Boivie 14:33, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Translating:Namespace name aliases can be created to handle this (these can be requested on this page (according to the previously linked page) or on Bugzilla). But I'm quite sure, that the developers and the Betawiki maintainers are careful enough to create namespace name aliases whenever they change namespace names. So no reason to be worried that wikis will become broken. --::Slomox:: >< 14:55, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Developers will take care of creating namespace aliases when needed. For Image -> File this will be needed, and done.
A question asked was: "Am I right, that File will be the namespace name, but Image still will be the normal standard way to include images in articles?". Well both will be possible: [[File:x.jpg]] and [[Image:x.jpg]] will render the same. Siebrand 10:23, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Unsupported messages in .po file?

Hi, Would it be possible to keep unsupported messages out of the .po files we generate and download for working on translations offline? I see several of my translations were deleted, with the reason given as "unsupported message." I hate to make work for you guys, and also, to spend the time translating stuff that is not desired.

Also, I think these unsupported messages also appear in the edit pane in the handy little utility that points us to messages with the same text to translate. If so, can they be removed, too?

Thanks! --Snakesteuben 09:57, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Would you be able to provide an example message where this happen? As far as I know, we export 'optional' as optional, and gettext editors (should) treat them as such, and we shouldn't be exporting ignored messages. Siebrand 11:57, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
I have no idea what you are referring to with unsupported message and neither does such term appear in the deletion log. – Nike 13:16, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
He refers to some Makebot and other extension messages, for which the supports was dropped a long ago. – Nike 13:21, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Nike, yeah, sorry about that. I guess the exact text of the deletion reason was "not a supported message" (redlink intentional, shows deletion message) and not "unsupported message." (And just FYI, "she." :-) )
Hi, Siebrand, optional is different from not supported, right? I'm permitted to enter translations for those, but it's not required. They won't be deleted. Don't see any of those deleted yet, so I assume that's the case. (And just FYI, I'm not actually using a gettext editor. I just use the po file as a support tool for working offline, and then I enter or pagefromfile.py the actual translations.) Snakesteuben 22:02, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
So, folks, how can I tell what's "not a supported message"? Nike, you say "Makebot and other extension messages." Is that a clue phrase, ignore anything labelled with some tag saying something like "extension message"?
And on our Makebot example here, should I infer that anything saying "Makebot" is illegal? If so, it looks as though I'm not the only translator affected. See, e.g., MediaWiki:Makebot-logentryrevoke/km and MediaWiki:Makebot-logpagetext/it and MediaWiki:Makebot-header/ksh and MediaWiki:Makebot-search/cu and MediaWiki:Makebot-username/hu. Should I go ahead and TWEP the rest of my own entries that say "Makebot", like Mediawiki:Makebot-isbot/fy? Or are just some Makebot entries tref and not all? Most confused.
Found partial answer to my own the second question here. Still, note that the translators in my list worked on their entries June/July-ish, well after 10 January when the messages were purportedly deprecated, so something somewhere is/was still asking for them ... Was fixed in r42210. Siebrand 10:40, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

The wording of this message is "If this user has entered a valid e-mail address in his or her user preferences, the form below will send a single message. The e-mail address you entered in your user preferences will appear as the "From" address of the e-mail, so the recipient will be able to reply directly to you."

This is slightly ambiguous since if there is no e-mail address (valid or otherwise) in the user preferences or the user has chosen not to receive e-mail then the form won't have appeared at all - instead the user will have got the message MediaWiki:Noemailtext. I suggest the following amendment to the first sentence:

You can use the form below to send a single message to the e-mail address entered in this user's preferences. {{SITENAME}} does not know whether or not this address is valid. Lloffiwr 10:41, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Dokumenting Diff-with-final

Diff-with-final (“&#32;and $1 $2”) needs more dokumentation. Anybody who could help? --Purodha Blissenbach 19:21, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

I added information about the parameters. The first is the name of a HTML attribute, such as "style" or "class" (possibly localised in [[MediaWiki:diff-<attribute name>]], but I don't think those messages exist in the language files). The second parameter is the value of the attribute. /Lejonel 11:46, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Date and time format, customization

date time preference for mk
date time preference for mk, expected

How to add more options in user preferences/date and time/date format? i.e. in macedonian language no one of the preset options are appropriate according to macedonian language standard, i.e. we need something like this YYYY.mm.dd format of date with dots between, instead of YYYY-mm-dd.

In preference if you choose different language, for example deutche, serbian... you should see more preset options / radio battons / under date and time tab, different then in english language. I suppose that there is some place in mediawiki where it is possible to set how many radio buttons to show with different date formats. As I say before, in Macedonian, we use dots to separate year from month and day, instead of minus sign (as in English). MediaWiki:Datedefault/mk, ...--brest 15:57, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Neither CLDR nor Microsoft lists YYYY-mm-dd as time format for Macedonian. There is dd MMMM yyyy and dd.MM.yyyy. Are these correct? – Nike 16:37, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
Correct, for dd.MM.yyyy, but I am not shure for YYYY-mm-dd. In practice also we use yyyy.MM.dd. So, if there is posibilities to change, how we can do it?--brest 06:59, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Two additional date formats in user preference, dd.MM.yyyy, and yyyy.MM.dd. If there is posibilities to change, how we can do it. As I understand Nike's comment, may be it is problem because of some standards.
Could you please confirm that the date/time format in the screenshot is what you expect/need? Raymond 14:48, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Checkuser-nomatch-edits

Checkuser-nomatch-edits (“No matches found. Last edit was on $1 at $2.”) needs date and time in individual variables, there is no way to form a grammaticaly correct sentence otherwise. Message name prefix index for Special:Translate

I think will be good idea to add message name prefix index filter in Special:Translate. This feature will be useful for MediaWiki messages where is ~ 2000 messages already and there is no other way to select group of messages such as EXIF related (Exif prefix). --EugeneZelenko 14:02, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Lot of work, and I do not see any real advantages. If you can provide a patch, please do. Alternatively: show all messages, highlight the ones you need with f.e. FireFox. Siebrand 18:27, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
I'd like a feature like that, too, mainly because of quicker loading time compared to "show all" + local selection. Yet it is of low priority to me. --Purodha Blissenbach 10:30, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Warning: Capitalize Special Page Names.

Maybe this warning is in vain (but better be safe than sorry). We can enter special page names via Special:Magic having a lower case initial character. There is a chance that, in wikis that capitalize pages names, this could cause a problem, but whether or not it does, is uncertain at the moment. See bug 16143, a special page became inaccessible. If it does create this problem, that's a MediaWiki bug, imho, and likely easily fixed, but nevertheless you may wish to know about it. --Purodha Blissenbach 11:53, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Translation statistics in language portal pages

When language portal pages have their statistic drawings updated, it might be feasible to update/add a copy of the line of the Group statistics about that language. This would be helpful for linking to it from outside translatewiki.net (while linking to the Group statistics page does not really make sense because it lacks per-language anchors to jump to) --Purodha Blissenbach 19:20, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Please provide a patch. We currently have no programming resources at all. Siebrand 20:18, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
I have no clue as to where such a patch should go, or where to start looking. Maybe you can give me basic directions? --Purodha Blissenbach 00:57, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
No clue whatsoever. I do have an open feature request, that would resolve this if it would be an includable special page: FEATURE: special page that lists translation status of all message groups for one language. Should probably be cached for 3-4 hours to not be too expensive. Siebrand 08:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
How ist Group statistics updated? There is likely a script for it. How about appending another one to it that, reading the group statistics data line by line, copies each entry into either Portal:zxx, or a subpage thereof? --Purodha Blissenbach 10:22, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Too inefficient. This is about all (meta) groups, and the stats pages are updated with a script running from cron. Siebrand 11:50, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, at the end of the script, data is there, and is stored in the wiki as a table. Another step could be, to store it a second time, now each line of the table into its language portal, or better, a subpage. What's inefficient? --Purodha Blissenbach 09:15, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Do you want advice on how to put your namespace translations into Wikipedia via Betawiki? If so, there is a short introduction to this on Translating:Translatable. The tool you want is Special:Magic. On that page there is a drop down menu to choose Namespaces. When you have saved your work there, please leave a message on Translating:Tasks to request that the new names be 'committed' (put into the wikimedia source software). Bakhtiari translations are in Persian

Hoi, I had Bakhtiari friends of mine look at the content of the Incubator and at the localisations in Betawiki. I was informed that it is not Bakhtiari but Persian. This means that we have a problem. Thanks, GerardM 16:15, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Looking a bit more, there is Bakhtiari in there as well... GerardM 16:44, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Can he fix/identify in more detail? Language code is 'bqi', by the way. It falls back to Farsi. It has 589 translations in MediaWiki core, 30 in MediaWiki extensions. Please verify that the person who verified has not judged based on fall back messages. Siebrand 23:57, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
I was present, we looked at the translated messages explicitly. The majority of the messages are in Bakhtiari. Thanks, GerardM 08:06, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
I am glad we have that cleared up. It shows both the advantages and weaknesses of fall back languages. Yes, it may be confusing, but at least it delivers something close to the intended language. A full localisation is of course best :) Siebrand 08:30, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Searchprofile-articles-and-proj (“Content & project pages”)

Where is this message used? Should we translate "Project" or it is namespace?- And what mean "Pages & Project"? Pages of namespace "Project" are pages too.-Ahonc 10:41, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

It is the third link in Special:Search at the top of the page. Clicking it will select the namespaces for 'content' and 'project' as 'to be searched' Siebrand 14:16, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
So, "Project" means User, Project, Category, Help and MediaWiki namespaces (all except Files and Articles)? So maybe you should replace "Pages" with "Articles" (or "Content pages").--Ahonc 15:55, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Done Done "Article" is not generic enough, so 'content pages' it is. The MediaWiki namespace is a local configuration in Betawiki, I think, because we consider messages part of the content. Siebrand 17:03, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Undelete-show-file-confirm (“Are you sure you want to view the deleted revision of the file "<nowiki>$1</nowiki>" from $2 at $3?”) has $2 described as "timestamp". Why do we have date+time preferences ($dateFormats['xxx both']), then? Shouldn’t they be removed as unusable? --Mormegil 12:10, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
They are fine for lists, "signature"s, etc. - actually everything that is not a normal sentence. Inside sentences, the order of date, and time, is somewhat arbitrary, and we always need to have (a) word(s) between them, and/or in front of them, depending on order and sometimes context. This is nothing that we would want to see in Lists, e.g., however. So, the date+time preferences setting is always unsuited for being used inside sentences, and vice versa. --Purodha Blissenbach 12:36, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Problem with "and"

In Special:ListGroupRights, next to "bureaucrats" (Bürrokrahde), we have:

Metmaacher en de Metmaacher-Jruppe Wiki-Köbesse, Övversäzer , un Bots erin dunn
Metmaacher us de Metmaacher-Jruppe Wiki-Köbesse, Övversäzer , un Bots eruß nämme

This documents a problem with And (“&#32;and”) in both Listgrouprights-addgroup (“Add {{PLURAL:$2|group|groups}}: $1”) and Listgrouprights-removegroup (“Remove {{PLURAL:$2|group|groups}}: $1”). There is an unwanted space before the comma, which is the initial character in And (“&#32;and”). --Purodha Blissenbach 12:41, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

The problem is in the piece of code below from Language.php (from line 1883). It assumes a leading space before message And (“&#32;and”) (in ". ' ' ." on line 1896). I think we can fix it by adding a leading space to all 'and' messages and removing the leading space from the code. Then we fuzzy all translated 'and's and it should be fixed, or at least have the same behaviour as before. I will not do this without some developer input... Siebrand 15:07, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Italicisation in messages

I've just downloaded MediaWiki from SVN latest build, and am trying to edit some parts of MessagesEn.php, MessagesFr.php and MessagesIt.php - please can someone help me with the code for italicising text in the messages, as when I try to edit some, I get this message:Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING, expecting ')' in C:\xampp\htdocs\wiki1\languages\messages\MessagesFr.php on line 2359

I'm new to this editing of MediaWiki message localisation. --Suncombe 20:07, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

The problem is that if you have something like
'message' => 'Message content',
and you change it to
'message' => 'Message content ''in italic''',
then PHP will understand this as 3 strings (since strings are delimited with ') and will result in the error you had. To not have this error, just use someting like
'message' => "Message content ''in italic''",
(this time the delimiter is ") or escape the ' with \', resulting in
'message' => 'Message content \'\'in italic\'\'',
iAlex 20:25, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Thanks iAlex, this is the bit I'm trying to fix:
'protect-summary-cascade'     => 'cascading',
'protect-expiring'            => 'expires $1 (UTC)',
'protect-expiry-indefinite'   => 'indefinite',

but I can't seem to get them to italicise very well. Same for French and Italian variants.

I should add I used Crimson Editor and WordPad when doing the edits. --Suncombe 21:20, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

In quite many instances, but not all, you can as well use <i> … </i> for italicasing. --Purodha Blissenbach 11:18, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Obsolete messages

Hi! I am not sure what is the right place to ask – is it possible to remove some unused messages from MediaWiki code, or mark them as obsolete, or whatever, so that they do not appear at Special:Translate as untranslated? I know about the following:

Thanks! --Mormegil 14:30, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

This would be the right place. I'll work on tracking these messages down, and will remove them if they are indeed unused. Siebrand 16:54, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
This extension addresses messages dynamically (like wfMsg( "Centralnotice-template-{$template}" )). Can you give a guarantee that you have checked for this? Siebrand 17:19, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, to the best of my knowledge. (This extension stores the texts of the notices into the MediaWiki namespace, and those are the messages fetched from Centralnotice-{something}-{something}; these messages are not defined in code, only by the notice administrators on-wiki.) Thanks, --Mormegil 09:46, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
I removed one message that was still used (per "SpecialCentralAuth.php: wfMsgExt( "centralauth-admin-{$action}-description", 'parse' )"). Siebrand 12:02, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
Oops! Sorry for that, I somehow missed that! (And thanks for the rest.) --Mormegil 13:08, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

But then I realized most of them are basically done except these !!FUZZY!! bits. So question 1) is what are those and how do I fix them? Question 2) other messages on the list are translated differently in the Hindi Wikipedia. Is there an easy way to compare and merge these? Also I take it this happened by people directly editing the Hindi Wikipedia Mediawiki namespace right? Question 3) is Mediawiki:History-fieldset-title really a top used page and for what? I don't know what it's used for so I don't know what to translate it to. Nothing links to it and I never see it show up in standard use. Thanks all. If this is all in the Fine Manual somewhere feel free to point me to it. I haven't seen it so far in my searching. - Taxman 16:01, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Too many questions. It is best if you create a heading for every question.
  1. See User:FuzzyBot. Compare the current message to the translation. Fix if needed, and remove the !!FUZZY!! afterwards. Cheers! Siebrand 16:50, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
    Got it. - Taxman 20:57, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
  2. No easy way. Yes, because people edit the MediaWiki namespace locally. Leave as is in hi.wp, or delete the pages in MediaWiki: on hi.wp. Siebrand 16:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Ok, hmm, that would be a really nice feature if it would be possible to do somehow. I suppose a bot could pull reports of the local differences. - Taxman 20:57, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
  3. History-fieldset-title (“Filter revisions”) is used on every history page. Siebrand 16:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Now I see it. Duh. That one's easy. - Taxman 20:57, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
That should be all. Siebrand 16:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the pointers. - Taxman 20:57, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Gep-emailbody (“User "$1" suggested category "$2" for site "$3".”)

I wonder how it's possible to suggest category for site? May be page on site will be more correct? --EugeneZelenko 15:27, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

It actually is a category for a site. Siebrand 17:07, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Problem with bidi-gadget.

The Gadget "Buttons to force text direction of text area." creates the same problem for me that is described in bug 9902 - there should be a line wrap allowed, between the "bidi=override" button, and the edit box's <textarea>.

I reported the issue as bug 15042, where it was closed by Nike: Not a MediaWiki issue. Affected code is in MediaWiki:Gadget-bidibuttons.js

It is not fixed atm. --Purodha Blissenbach 09:57, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

When is "MediaWiki:message" used, and when "MediaWiki:message/zxx" ?

My question is based on the following thought, which seems somehow flawed.

  • We have additional items locally, in our SideBar (page does not exist), for which we try to add as many translations, locally, as we can, while the remaining languages should be using their respective fallbacks, or English, in the end.
  • Our Wiki uses the language code ksh by default.
  • We create a local message in the MediaWiki namespace, say MediaWiki:Portal-2, and its translations as MediaWiki:Portal-2/en, MediaWiki:Portal-2/de, MediaWiki:Portal-2/nl, … et cetera, and
  • we use " ** |portal-2 " in SideBar (page does not exist) so as to refer to it.

We observe:

  1. MediaWiki:Portal-2/ksh is never used, although it's the wiki's default language.
  2. MediaWiki:Portal-2/en is not used anywhere, except for English, especially not as a fallback.
  3. MediaWiki:Portal-2 appears to be used
    • (A) as the only fallback for all languages,
    • (B) as the default, when no language has been specified,
    • (C) even when the wikis language is selected.

This seems odd, and appears to 'overburden' a single message with too many uses, or meanings.

As a remark, here is what would be appearing to be both useful, and logical, imho:
  • The chain of fallback languages of file …/MessagesZxx.php should be always be followed, even in the MediaWiki name space.
  • If MediaWiki:message/zxx exists, for the wiki language zxx, then it should be used, when zxx has been selected.
  • If MediaWiki:message exists, it should be used, when either of the above fails to find a message.
  • (Certain exceptions apply, of course, as we currently have them, e.g. for finding SideBar (page does not exist))

My questions: (1) Is this a special thing going along with other special treatments related to SideBar (page does not exist) only? And (2) how do we get what we want: Correct fallback chains for added SideBar entries?

Thank you. --Purodha Blissenbach 12:14, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Fix it if you can. Otherwise it will be at the bottom of the to do list, which is too long, and we need developers! I'm the only one developing on Translate at the moment, and that really gets us nothing but a few tiny bug fixes and Special:Translations, which is a combination of Special:PrefixIndex and Special:Translate, and not really original. Siebrand 12:23, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
I do not doubt that I can - it may take time though, to dig my way through the code, until I know exactly, how - but may I? I am hesitant to maybe break something, or overthrow some well-thought-out framework, which I simply do not know or understand. (thinking…) Well, you encouraged me, so I'll try to get a patch together, and come back. Thank you! --Purodha Blissenbach 12:38, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
The solution is called "local test wiki". WORKSFORME, as I can break everything I want, and then have to get it working again before I can commit something :) Siebrand 13:09, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
there is a wiki which I can break and repair - on a well maintained remote system, having the advantage of much more advanced hardware, than I could possibly buy.
I was apparently only needing someone telling me that the current behaviour of Mediawiki 18n was not really set in stone, or intended as it is. :-) --Purodha Blissenbach 19:37, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
It is only 1.14alpha. No one said it was done. :) Siebrand 21:18, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

SpecialPage/NameSpaces

Hello, Nike. As you can see, now I start to change special pages and also later I'll change MAGIC WORDS (Not much requared to be changed). While I'm still localizing some interface, I stumbled to find this links:

  • CATEGORY = JAMII
  • IMAGE = PICHA

I tried to find them, but I just couldn't find them more easily. So, could you kindly consider to help me translating those words? Or, even try to show me where their sittuated? Best regards, Muddyb Blast, --Muddyb Blast Producer 13:39, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

I do not know exactly what you mean. Does Special:Magic give you what you need? Siebrand 14:01, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
What I need is to change CATEGORY and IMAGE to Swahili:
  • CATEGORY=JAMII
  • IMAGE=PICHA

At the specialpage (etc - http://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bea.jpg to Kiswahili http://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picha:Bea.jpg -). Did you get my point?--Muddyb Blast Producer 17:31, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Ah. Please see FAQ item 1. Also, the "Image" namespace has been renamed to "File"; have you translated it correctly? I will make certain it is in MediaWiki. Siebrand 18:04, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
It might be happen for sometimes! That one suppose to be PICHA and not FAILI! I really have to appologize on that! Wish you happy!--Muddyb Blast Producer 09:22, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Inconsistency

Page http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&group=core-1.12 with language set to ksh currently shows a link named category-media-count at the end of the list. Next to it is a text. Now, clicking the link brings me to the page http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=MediaWiki:Category-media-count/ksh&action=edit&loadgroup=core-1.12 which shows a different text. So as not to get something wrong, and not disturb anything, I do not translate it, atm. --Purodha Blissenbach 08:29, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Niklas needs to answer this. There must be an explanation for this phenomenon. Siebrand 21:37, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Got it. This message was used in MediaWiki 1.12 and reused by Metavidwiki. I renamed the message for Metavidwiki in r44743. Siebrand 00:08, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Logdelete-log-message (“$1 for $2 {{PLURAL:$2|event|events}}”)

Am not able to translate this without knowing where the message belongs and what the parameters are. It's a puzzle! Lloffiwr 20:16, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Quite hard to get to see this message. It is used in Special:Revisiondelete, a functionality that is not enabled on a lot of wiki (it is here on Betawiki, but only for bureaucrats and up). The message is used in method "getLogMessage" which is described as "Gets a log message to describe the given revision visibility change. This message will be of the form "[hid {content, edit summary, username}]; [unhid {...}][applied restrictions to sysops] for $count revisions: $comment"."
I am still trying what I need to do to make it visible :) Code block below. Siebrand 12:52, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
		$msg = $isForLog ? 'logdelete-log-message' : 'revdelete-log-message';
		$ret = wfMsgExt ( $msg, array( 'parsemag', 'content' ),
			$s, $wgContLang->formatNum( $count ) );
OK, I got a little bit further. This stuff is *really obscure* and if enabled, very few users will be able to get access to it. MediaWiki has functionality to hide information from revisions or log entries. When abe to do that, the hiding user can choose 3 things that can be hidden: "content, edit summary, username". The message "$1 for $2 events" disects to:
  • $1 can be "Revdelete-hid (“hid $1”)" or "Revdelete-unhid (“unhid $1”)" and the parameters of the previous two messages can be one or more of Revdelete-content (“content”), redelete-summary, or Revdelete-uname (“username”). As far as I can see, there is no log that will display all actions made with revdelete. They are part of Special:Log.
  • $2 is a numeral for the number of revisions that were hidden. It should be possible to hide multiple revisions in one go, but there is no UI for that; also, I was not able to find the correct syntax to do this (should name multiple revision numbers in the URL somehow).
Example log entries are:
"(show/hide) 14:00, 4 December 2008 Siebrand (Talk | contribs | block) changed event visibility of (Deletion log) ‎ (unhid content, edit summary for 1 event: testing) (Change visibility)"
"(show/hide) 13:56, 4 December 2008 Siebrand (Talk | contribs | block) changed event visibility of (Deletion log) ‎ (hid content, edit summary, username for 1 event: testing) (Change visibility)"
I hope this explains things. Please, if you are able to, also document all the messages I named above. Siebrand 13:12, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the reminder. Am quite busy just now but have made a note to document the above. Will leave a message here when done. Lloffiwr 14:43, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Have attempted to add explanations to these messages - it turns out that explanations had already been added to the related message Revdelete-log-message (“$1 for $2 {{PLURAL:$2|revision|revisions}}”). But, after translating logdelete-log-message and revdelete-log-message they don't appear in the log visible to me. So in the example above "changed event visibility of" appears in Welsh, "(undid content, edit summary for 1 event:testing)" is still in English and "(Change visibility)" doesn't appear at all. Is it correct to add to the explanation of these 2 messages that they are visible only to the people who have the power to make the changes? Lloffiwr 11:52, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
I think parameters are put in the log entries hard coded, and they cannot be i18n-ed; they will always be in the content language. Siebrand 00:11, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Explanation expanded. Lloffiwr 10:16, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Fundraiserstats-day

Fundraiserstats-day (“Day $1 of $2”) needs a special editin of PLURAL, since it's $1 has to be translated to an ordinal, if I understand it right, i.e. like this "$1-th day of $2 days" — We do not have this functionality, do we? Also, for just one message of a very special extension, I doubt it would be advisable, to make one. --Purodha Blissenbach 16:22, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Dunno. Have a link to live usage or a screenshot of the message? Siebrand 19:48, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Extension Collection

The Extension:Collection has an extra help page which is not in the MediaWiki namespace. There are currently versions for English, German, and Kölsch. As I see it, we cannot translate them on translatewiki.net. Is there a place, or a way, to let translators know of these texts? Imho, they should learn about them when translating messages for the extension, and ask developers with svn access, or submit them via bugzilla. --Purodha Blissenbach 19:16, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

I tend to add a page after Translating:Process having a list of special cases (MediaWiki, extensions, other) that currently cannot be done completely in translatewiki.net, and hints what to do. If you agree, I'll make it. --Purodha Blissenbach 19:16, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, if I understood correctly, the developer of that extension asked me what is the proper way to translate help pages. He was concerned that the page they have have been translated and 'customised to few languages. Where should those kind of pages be translated? Should it happen here and/or should I fix the <translate> feature? – Nike 20:13, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Maybe, and yes. Siebrand 20:21, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
In its README.txt, it asks installers to manually load the apropriate help page in the target wiki, and amend it to match local specifics.
Having translated the page, I must say that, I think it would work out-of the-box, but few details, like category names, template names, etc. should imho better be adjusted according to local needs. While I believe that could be taken care of by customizing them in the MediaWiki name space, and using {{int: ... }}, or {{MediaWiki: ... }}, appropriately, this is currently not done. Since there is no mechanism to automatically install the help page in the wiki, I felt little urge to implement these uses atm.
Btw. as fas as MediaWikis own help pages are concerned, we have a similar unsolved problem. --Purodha Blissenbach 22:54, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

If there wouldn't be that discussion I should have placed there: 'die' (which means plural they, just like Dutch, which has placed the plural 'ze' there. It could be there are more wrong messages then, but we can't check it because Dutch has that problem too. Matthias 06:08, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Replace "globaal" with "mondiaal"

Can someone replace globaal/globale with mondiaal/mondiale in Dutch translations? This has been requested at the Dutch Wikipedia per discussion, but it should be changed in MediaWiki and not at one project. According to the request there are about 250 affected messages, so can anyone do this using a bot? --Erwin85 21:28, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

I see no reason for change. Van Dale gives the following synonyms for "globaal": wereldwijd, mondiaal. The translations are correct. Siebrand 22:34, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Maybe, there are ones in extensions. In MediWiki's messages, there are zero occurrences of /[Gg]loba(al|le)/ to be found. --Purodha Blissenbach 00:30, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
It is of course used in CentralAuth... Siebrand 06:54, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
The woord "globaal" is to be preferred anyway, it fits better in this context, the French word mondial is more associated with our physical earth. Thanks, GerardM 08:23, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Is it possible to improve Special:Search to allow filter language for translation? For example search MediWiki only to English, Russian, Polish, etc?

Also will be great to have "exact phrase/sentence" option there. It'll be very useful feature for finding identical messages, unless automatic collection will be implemented. EugeneZelenko 15:17, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

FreeCol messages

Is it possible to add documentation to FreeCol messages? For example:

  • Red (“Red”) - is it player color?
  • Chilly (“Chilly”) - is it climate or weather?
  • Large (“Large”) - is it map size?

and so on. Translation of such messages to Slavic languages are gender specific in relation to subject, so it's necessary to know subject they are referring. EugeneZelenko 14:26, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

I hope Niklas is able to look into this. Siebrand 18:39, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
I'll try. But I'm guessing that colors refer to player colors, chilly is a climate together with hot, warm, temperate and cold; and large can refer to "amount of X, where X can be villages, rivers and such" in addition to map size. – Nike 18:58, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Help

Hi im new here. So my doubt is, is there any way to see the page (or one of tha pages) that uses a particular mediawiki messeage? It is hard to translate without knowing the context. Thanks.--Abhishek Jacob 11:36, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I am thinking about making something like that possible. The bad news: It's a lot of work to get there, and it would take months even if I had not much else to do. Meanwhile, related messages very often are grouped together, so if you inspect the messages around the one which you are in doubt about, you may grasp more context information. In doubt, do ask. --Purodha Blissenbach 16:28, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Niklas says that we are (a) missing the correct unicode fonts (we do not have *all*), and (b) phplot does not do font substitution. Looks like this cannot be easily fixed, even if we have the fonts for currently supported languages. Siebrand 08:55, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Made some hacks and installed some fonts. Looks like there is some spacing issues, but at least we should be able to handle every language if there is ttf font for it. Of course we do not have all fonts installed for now. – Nike 17:58, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

!!FUZZY!! and old message content

From time to time, I stumble over fuzzied messages, the translation of which does not appear to need amendment. A recent sample is Code-rev-submit (“Save changes”). Ok, occasionally, I have to look twice, but that does not always help. If I am not lazy, I look the change of the original message up via [WebSvn]. Suggestion: when fuzzying messages, the old original could be saved in translatewiki.net, e.g. as /qpr, and later shown on the edit screen in the same way, the new orignal messages are. Nothing of great importance or great urgency, anyways. Greetings --Purodha Blissenbach 17:01, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Changes are usually preserved in msg/en, if they are imported often enough. In addition we try to provide edit comment when fuzzying. – Nike 12:13, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
This message had "commit" changed to "save". I guess many translators had already translated this as 'save'. Siebrand 17:26, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Messages needing PLURAL

Make it so, Number One. Siebrand 11:58, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
I checked out the code a bit. I do not fully agree on Tasks my assignments (“Your current {{PLURAL:$1|assignment|assignments}}”) needing plural. It is an h2 in html. Just a header for the list. However, a count of the number of elements can be available at the time the message is used, so you should be able to make it dynamic. It uses wfMsgHTML, which will need to be converted to using wfMsgExt with escape and parsemag to properly process plural statements. I have made the changes in r44999. I suggest you check them out. It needs a little learning, but you should be able to do these things yourself. Siebrand 14:52, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
I'll certainly do so when I'm back from chrismasss related family visits. That I make notes here about suggested changes to messages does not necessarily mean that I am not on the way to do them myself, even if I happen to be the slower one most of the recent times :-) I hope to be improving, and yes, seing how it can be done does help a lot. Substitued Parameters reported as ERROR

While translating, I found one issue on it. Some messages has nore that one parameters of the same type. For example "There was an unknown error "%s" during execution of the "%s" plugin."

In English it could appears like "There was an unknown error "AAAA" during execution of the "BBBB" plugin."

But in some languages (Russian for example) it prefefable from grammatical point of view to looks like "<TEXT> "BBBB" <TEXT> "AAAA" <TEXT>"

See an example here: http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Mantis:MANTIS_ERROR%5Cx5bERROR_PLUGIN_GENERIC%5Cx5d/ru

If target progect uses PHP, the solution is simple:

If we need to specify the number of expected parameter in string, we just need to write something like "Lalal %2$s bububu %1$d", where 1 and 2 - the parameter index number in original message. It's a standart behaviour of PHP sprintf() function. See http://php.net/manual/en/function.sprintf.php

Fine. BUT: such messages reported as having a PROBLEMS. See http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special%3ATranslate&task=problematic&group=out-mantis&language=ru&limit=100 (considered as not all parameters are used)

Is it possible to do something with it?

Done Done. Mantis internationalisation has gotten a big improvement now that multiple parameters in a message are numbered. Please check your messages with problems. Siebrand 20:24, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Translate or not?

The documentation for interwiki log added/qqq and interwiki log edited/qqq states: Leave parameters and text between brackets exactly as it is. The text between the brackets is this: (trans: $4) (local: $5). I've noticed there are messages named similar to these (interwiki trans and interwiki local), but they are not transcluded. Maybe not yet implemented? Or is it a mistake in the the documentation and the text should be translated? Gondnok 11:46, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

"trans" and "local" in Interwiki log added (“added prefix "$2" ($3) (trans: $4) (local: $5) to the interwiki table”) are the field names in the interwiki table. Interwiki trans (“Transclude”) and Interwiki local (“Forward”) are column headers in Special:Interwiki. This functionality is rather new in core, and I expect it to be either reverted back to the extension Interwiki, or the latter messages to be changed, as they are not as clear as they can be... Siebrand 12:16, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the answer, but I need more clarification to be sure. :) Before I asked I checked on a local wiki how the interwiki log looks like, and the text (trans, local) remained unchanged. That's why I asked if it can be translated. So translating it won't brake any current (or future) functionality, right? It is already translated on some languages. --Gondnok 12:59, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
