For the iNaturalist website, @cgalindo has worked hard to standardize the language and verb tenses used for es-mx which is used on the official Mexican portal to iNaturalist, Naturalist.mx. However, approximately once a month, a well-intentioned translator comes along and tries to change everything to a different tense.
Here's one example: https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=iNaturalist:Choose_taxon/es&diff=next&oldid=8477038
Is there a place to leave clear, general instructions for a particular language (such as a preference for the imperative)? Thank you for any advice you can provide for this.
Hi Carrieseltzer,
Currently the project page is the best place to list down such notes / rules for translators. In addition, we recommend that whenever you notice conventions not being followed, please leave a link to these notes on the talk page for the translator.
Probably a lot of people start translating iNaturalist after going through the web-page here, so we also recommend updating that to leave a link to the notes / rules.
I've added a new feature request here. You can add any further inputs that you have there.
Regards,
Hi Abijeet,
Thank you for that suggestion. When you say the project page, do you mean https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Translating:INaturalist? What is the main way that people navigate to this page?
I'll work with cgalindo to articulate the preferences for es-mx on both the project page and our own wiki.
Thank you also for adding the feature request. I think that will ultimately be better.
Hello Carrieseltzer,
Yes, that's what I meant from the project page.
Translators can navigate to this page by clicking on the Need more help? Ask for more information link displayed in the documentation section when translation a message.
On this page, you can then add a header that links to an FAQ page.
Hi Carrieseltzer, did you try using the project page for such information? Let us know how we can help.
The first step is usually to try direct communication to fellow translators: I've now left a message to the translator you mentioned.
@Nike and Nemo: Hello. The message iNaturalist:Authority list/en is empty. Please cancel it from translatable messages or fill out it

Hi. What is Maverick? I found it here https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/2018 but also the other words ( improving, supporting, [leidend] ) I do not know what exactly it meant with it. Is documentation available about these statusus ( maverick, improving, supporting, [leidend] ) ?
===found this: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/help#identification
There are several types of IDs:
Leading: Taxon descends from the community taxon. This identification could be leading toward the right answer.
Improving: First suggestion of this taxon that the community subsequently agreed with. This identification helped refine the community taxon.
Supporting: Taxon is the same as the community taxon. This identification supports the community ID.
Maverick: Taxon is not a descendant or ancestor of the community taxon. The community does not agree with this identification.
Too short fragments (like "to", "on"...) are too hard to translate, especially if they don't have direct correspondence in my language at all (like "the" and "an"). Better to give some wider formulae (like "give $1 to an $2"). Or at least provide some documentation to mark the context of such fragments.
