Don't submit identical translations

British English

Stop modifying the "/en-gb" pages by replacing "licence" with "license," as they are intended for British English translations. Shirayuki (talk) 23:57, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

Sorry for this - license is a confusing one (at least for me) which I was in the process of going back and correcting my own mistakes. I understand that "licence" (as in the actual licence) is used as a noun and "license" (as in to license, under license) is used as a verb. A lot of the ones I changed (admittedly incorrectly) were blanket changed to "licence". I had to look this up - even though I speak British English!

As far as I'm aware in British English, we use computer "program" the same as Americans which were incorrectly translated to "programme" and also a computer "dialog" box much the same as Americans which were also incorrectly translated to "dialogue".

I didn't come here to vandalise or cause trouble - it was a simple misunderstanding. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I have also explained this to shirayuki who asked me to stop changing "licence" to "license". I understand that "licence" (as in the actual licence) is used as a noun and "license" (as in to license, under license) is used as a verb in British English. A lot of the ones that were already translated and I changed (admittedly incorrectly) were blanket changed to "licence" for both verb and noun which was incorrect in British English and on realising this, I was trying to go back and discard my edits. I had to look this up - even though I speak British English!

As far as I'm aware in British English, we use computer "program" the same as Americans which were incorrectly translated to and didn't need translating to "programme" (e.g. a theatre programme) and also a computer "dialog" box much the same as Americans which were also incorrectly translated to and didn't need translating to "dialogue" (e.g. to talk in dialogue). We do use some American words in the context of computer systems and these had been incorrectly translated for British English.

I also didn't realise not everything needed translating which I didn't know.

Sorry if it seems like I was causing trouble - it wasn't intended. I am new here and thought I was helping.

Thank you for the response.

I've restored your permission.

Translations into languages with variant spellings, especially British English, are necessary, but quite complicated to manage for a lot of reasons. Massive edits with them are particularly hard to review.

I cleaned up your unnecessary edits. I left quite a lot of your contributions intact because they were clearly necessary. I also deleted a few of your edits even though they were good, because it would be better to fix that in the upstream code and not here, such as the "Janurary" misspelling in Miraheze or the fixing of ` to ' in OpenStreetMap.

In the future, please:

• Don't copy the source message completely.
• If a translation into British English is different and you think that it should be identical to the source text, don't change it to the source text, but report it to the Support page and provide the message key, which appears above the source text.
• Don't make too many changes that are not completely necessary, such as "e-mail" and "co-ordinate". Everyone agrees about "colour" and "licence", but as far as I can tell, "email" and "coordinate" are just as valid in British English as the version with hyphen, so don't make such big changes unless you have consulted with other translators, and you are really sure that it's necessary.
• If you see something that should be fixed in the source message, report it to the Support page or directly to project developers using the "Ask for more information" link at the bottom of the right-hand information panel next to each message. If you can use Git, you are welcome to submit direct fixes to the source code (if you don't know how to use, but you are willing to learn, I am happy to explain how to do it).

Many thanks for your helpful messages and understanding - I will be a bit more careful going forward and try not to blow up the site! I didn't realise until late either that there is a box to put your rationale for the change - I will fill this out going forward so my changes are clear. I will keep an eye out and report these errors in English to the support page.

There were already a lot of submissions with e-mail in some and email in others which is inconstant (especially in OSM) - quite rightly, email is just as valid as e-mail but for consistency sake, is it best to stick with the original? Should it be changed back if someone has already submitted it is e-mail as a lot under OSM will need re-reviewing.
