Translating talk:How to start

From translatewiki.net

Why is point three

If I wanted to change preference language I would have done so before I created a user page etc. By "working on" I would (at this project) understand the language(s) I would translate to (or from), but I really can't see what this has to do with "my prefences". Regards, Finnrind 17:37, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

You'd be surprised how many people we have that try to edit 'their' language in the standard English language UI. Hence it is part of the steps that lead to succesfully localising. The UI of Special:Translate automagically uses your UI language to sort out which language you will be working on... Cheers! Siebrand 19:15, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Copy that. Should have known there was some automagic involved. Finnrind 22:23, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

How terrible. Hardwiring the two together. I can work 1000 time better in the other language but you force me to use the first. I can't. Don't assume everybody is like yourselves. See also /en. Jidanni 03:03, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

IRC redirects here and there is no information, what is the room name. If you want to ease the web, leave here its name please. I thought you want me to translate, so I dont understand, why I should spend minutes and maybe hours, looking for the chat room name.

Is this what your are looking for?

Languages?

Where are the language name translations used by the <languages /> block stored? Several are not translated to my preferred language yet.

Oh, by the way, if you use a question mark in the "Start a new thread" box, it screws up the script badly.

Urhixidur14:24, 29 August 2010

That's CLDR.

Siebrand14:32, 29 August 2010

Update: That <languages /> is not coherent with {{languages}} used in other pages of the same group: the latter uses the autonyms of the languages rather than translating them into the local page's language. We should use or the other, not both.

Urhixidur14:45, 29 August 2010

So fix it? ;)

Seriously, we shouldn't be using Template:Languages anymore.

"add details to the status page"

In Translating:How_to_start#Set_your_user_interface_to_the_language_you_will_be_working_on there is an instruction to "add details to the status page", which is the special page Supported Languages. Is it possible to add details since this is now a special page (and wasn't originally if I remember right)? Aren't all the entries generated automatically now? If so, then we need to drop this part of the sentence.

You have to add your name with the proper template ({{user|username}}) to the /translators subpage of a language portal to be included there.

Have updated this section along the lines discussed above.
