Hi Bloomaround. Welcome to translatewiki.net!

You can now start translating.

You should also check the portal for your language, the link is in the sidebar. Other useful pages are linked in the menu next to this message.

Your translations are transferred to the standard product every few days or every few weeks, depending on the product. Please notice that it may take longer before you see your translation in the actual product.

We wish you a productive and pleasant stay. Please leave any questions on Support (the link is also available on any page, in the navigation sidebar). Cheers!

Namespaces

Hi!

Thanks to your work, the Coptic language will probabⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑly be soon become usable as an interface language.

It would be great to also translate the namespace names. Please see Translating:MediaWiki#Translating namespace names. There is no way to do it in the translation interface, so if you can simply send them here as a reply, it would be great. Thank you! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 04:01, 4 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks! I'd translate it like this:
Ⲫⲙⲉⲥⲟⲧⲏⲥ - Media, Ⲫⲓⲇⲓⲟⲛ/Ⲛⲓⲓ̀ⲇⲓⲟⲛ (pl.)- Special, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ - Talk, Ⲫⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ/Ⲑⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ - User (m/f), Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀ⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ - User talk, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀Wikipedia - Wikipedia Talk, Ⲡⲕⲟⲓϩⲓ - File, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀ⲕⲟⲓϩⲓ - File talk, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲙ̀MediaWiki - MediaWiki talk, Ⲯⲙⲟⲧ - Template, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀ⲥⲙⲟⲧ - Template talk, Ⲫⲃⲟⲏⲑⲟⲥ - Help, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲙ̀ⲃⲟⲏⲑⲟⲥ - Help talk, Ⲡⲅⲉⲛⲟⲥ - Category, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀ⲅⲉⲛⲟⲥ - Category talk.
Ⲫⲙⲱⲇⲓⲟⲩⲗ - Module, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲙ̀ⲙⲱⲇⲓⲟⲩⲗ, Ⲡϩⲟ - Page, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀ϩⲟ - Page talk, Ⲡⲕⲁⲧⲁⲗⲟⲅⲟⲥ - Index, Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀ⲕⲁⲧⲁⲗⲟⲅⲟⲥ.
Thank you for your help! Bloomaround (talk) 21:27, 7 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I looked at the current translations, and I have some questions:
  1. User: The spellings in the current translations are a bit different, more like "ⲛ̀ⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ". Are you sure that "Ⲫⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ" is correct? If the grammar requires "Ⲫⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ/Ⲑⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ", then it's OK, but I have to check.
  2. In "Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀Wikipedia", is there no space between ⲛ̀ and "Wikipedia"? I guess that it's correct, but I did want to verify. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk)
Basically, ⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ and ⲣⲉϥⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ are the same thing. Ⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ is a Greek loan word and it was borrowed both directly and with preceding ⲉⲣ- "to do". I've used the shorter version for convenience here, but giving it a second thought, ⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ is still predominantly used, thus ⲛ̀ⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ would indeed be a better option, sorry. So "Ⲫⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ/Ⲑⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ".
There's no space, correct. Does "Wikipedia" here need to be translated? --Bloomaround (talk) 10:17, 8 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the responses!
"Wikipedia" has to be translated, just like it's translated to Greek, Russian, Arabic, etc. However, it's not done here. It will really have to be done only when the site is created. That's why it's written in italics in the table to which I linked earlier—it can be any site name, but "Wikipedia" is often (though not always) the first one. So for now, "Ⲫⲙⲁ ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛ̀Wikipedia" is good enough. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:55, 13 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Here's the configuration file update: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/core/+/1104025/1/languages/messages/MessagesCop.php
Can you please take a look and check that everything is spelled correctly?
Thanks! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:12, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hey! A few adjustments – for NS_USER_TALK it's 'Ⲫⲙⲁ_ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ_ⲙ̀ⲫⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ'/'Ⲫⲙⲁ_ⲛ̀ⲥⲁϫⲓ_ⲛ̀ⲑⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲭⲣⲁⲥⲑⲉ'. (m/f). Ⲛ̀/ⲙ̀ is needed to indicate the genitive case. Also, after giving it a second thought, I’d change ‘Special’ to Ⲑⲁ ϯⲟⲓⲕⲟⲛⲟⲙⲓⲁ̀ ("the one of administration, management, service"). However, I’m unsure whether it should be singular or plural. If it needs to be plural, it would be Ⲛⲁ ϯⲟⲓⲕⲟⲛⲟⲙⲓⲁ̀. An adjective on its own (Ⲛ̀ⲓⲇⲓⲟⲛ) doesn’t look natural in Coptic, and the exact meaning of "special" as intended here aligns better with that. Apart from that, everything is good, thank you! Bloomaround (talk) 19:24, 17 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
"Special" should probably be singular. English doesn't distinguish number in adjectives (and I guess that this is an adjective), but in languages that do distinguish number, it's singular, for example Russian (Служебная), Hebrew (מיוחד), French (Spécial). In plural, it would be Служебные, מיוחדים, Spéciales.
More precisely, all these namespace names appear in page titles before the colon, for example:
... and so on.
So whatever works for the language's grammar in such a position should be used here.
If you want to change it from "Ⲛ̀ⲓⲇⲓⲟⲛ" to something with "-ⲟⲓⲕⲟⲛⲟⲙⲓⲁ̀", it's OK, but then you should also update the existing translations:
(If a message mentions several "special pages", then it should probably be plural. Example: MediaWiki:Nospecialpagetext, which says "A list of valid special pages", "Список существующих служебных страниц", etc. Here, too, the more precise answer is that the correct form that works with the language's grammar is the one that should be used. But in this thread, I'm talking about translation of namespace names, which are a bit different from messages.) Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 20:52, 17 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've updated the patch according to your comments: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/core/+/1104025/5/languages/messages/MessagesCop.php
Can you please check it again? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:38, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looks good, thank you! I've updated the existing translations. But I've realised that "Special page" is implied in "Special", so it should be Ⲫⲁ ϯⲟⲓⲕⲟⲛⲟⲙⲓⲁ̀, because "page" is masculine, sorry. And if you could adjust NS_USER_TALK according to my previous comment, that would be great. Bloomaround (talk) 14:44, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I made some strange mistake there. Now I think that I fixed all of them. Can you please check again at https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/core/+/1104025/6/languages/messages/MessagesCop.php ? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:40, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think it looks good! Bloomaround (talk) 19:17, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
