Gegë (Gheg Albanian)
Conditional approval has been given to the Gheg languages (aln - as it is a language withing the Albanian macro language, sq can be the fall back language. GerardM 11:00, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Could you please clear this up. Are you requesting a macro language to be added (aln)? How is this ever going to have an unambivalent localisation? Siebrand 11:05, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- sq is Albanian and typically it is Tosk. aln is Gheg and they have requested a Wikipedia. They will not get this without a localisation into Gheg. So I am not asking for sq to be treated as a macro language, I am asking for a new language. GerardM 11:10, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Alemannisch (Alemannic)
I have asked Brion to rename the als wikipedia to gsw wikipedia. als is the wrong language code for Allemanic. GerardM 11:00, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- This language is already present. This page is for requesting translator rights. Siebrand 11:04, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- I know, this is not the right place to discuss it, but, @GerardM: gsw is the wrong language code for the language now present under als. gsw is Swiss German, als is Alemannic. gsw is only a subset of Alemannic. The project now under als won't accept gsw as code, I guess. The scope is not the same. Brion may be the right one to ask on the technical side, but he has not the position to decide on changing the scope of a project. Get consent of the community for any change or ask ISO to introduce a new code representing the actual language identity. --Slomox 16:32, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Well, als is fully redirected to gsw, with all comments in the code. Language groups should never have a localisation. Anyway, that's how it is from a MediaWiki localisation point of view. Any matters of politics regarding Wikimedia projects should be dealt with at Wikimedia's meta:, most definately not here. Cheers! Siebrand 17:33, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Frysk (Western Frisian)
After making Saterfrisian|stq message translations, I am asked to make message translations into Westfrisian. Therefore I need in addition to translator status at least temporarely Dutch as a fall-back language. --Pyt 18:06, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- The Westfrisian community did not want Dutch as fallback, so we can 1) add Dutch as fallback in the language file so it falls back on all projects or 2) a local fallback so it only falls back here. What do you want? SPQRobin 18:31, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- I think it would be best to talk to the Frysian community about this; we will not honour a global fallback request at this point in time. It will be honoured with reference to Frysian Wikipedia community consensus. Betawiki local fallback is possible. Btw, you can work on any language once you have translator rights. Cheers! Siebrand 18:47, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
- The only thing I need, is to have the Dutch text in addition to the English originaltext during translation. When this can be reached by Betawiki local fallback, it would be fine! --Pyt 20:01, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

- You are right, moreover North Azerbaijani [2] --Cuman 16:57, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- OK, nice to know that we have a translator with potenial. Very nice. Should we configure a fallback language for 'gag' other than English? This means that messages that are not available in 'gag' will not be dispayed in English, but in another language. Cheers! Siebrand 16:06, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- If no objections I think fallback should be 'ro' because Autonomous judet of Gagauzia is part of Republic of Moldova or 'tr' because 'gag' is very close to 'tr'.--AlefZet 16:43, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- Well, 'we' also already brought it down to a possible 'ro', 'tr', or 'bg'. But 'we' live nowhere near, so have no real clue. 'bg' probably has an incompatible script (although sources contradict eachother: Wikipedia states that Gagauz is written in Latin, while Ethnologue states it is Cycillic). 'bg' has the best localisation (95%), 'ro' and 'tr' are not far behind with 90% and 70% respectively, where I need to remark that 'tr' is currently very active as they have a running request for a new Wikimedia project (which means that they'll probably have core and WMF extensions complete soon). Choices, choices :) Siebrand 17:04, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- As a informed person about this region, I'd propose 'tr' or 'ru'. Not 'ro' because, the majority of Gagauzes can't speak in Romanian, in Soviet period education was strictly in Russian. Practically all representatives of this people are Russophones, too. I think 'bg' is most irreal idea. So, my position is 'ru' or 'tr' are the ideal fallback language for 'gag'. More exactly, 'ru', but if it is not possible - 'tr'.
- p.s. Gagauz script was Cyrillic before 90's, but after the proclamation of autonomy is Latin. -- Cuman 10:40, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- As I think falling back to a different script is awkward to say the least, I have chosen Turkish as fallback. Thank you for all your input. Cheers! Siebrand 16:07, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
