"ad una"

Hi!

Thanks a lot for your translations into Italian.

I learned some Italian once, so I got curious about something. By coincidence, I noticed the Italian translation "Aggiungi un'immagine ad una voce senza illustrazioni", which appears several times. You can see all of them on the search page. My spell checker, which supports a lot of languages, suggests that it should be written "a una", but I don't trust spell checkers blindly. What's the correct way to write it? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 06:57, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Amir!
Good question. In grammar it's called "d eufonica" and it is one of the aspects that is undergoing changes in recent times and therefore the subject of controversy.
Here you can find some discussions of it.wiki community on this topic. See also: manual of style and article.
Sources: Treccani (most famous Italian vocabulary) and Accademia della Crusca (it is one of the main points of reference for research on the Italian language).
Trying to summarize: in the past the use of "d eufonica" was much more widespread, both in written and oral form. Over time, with an acceleration in the last 50/100 years, use has greatly decreased.
In practice nowadays, if the following word begins with the same vowel then the "d eufonica" should be used. With some exceptions: ad esempio, fino ad ora or a adesso, e edifici. In the other cases the tendency is not to use the "d eufonica", especially in the oral form, but formally it is not an error if it is used.
The path is clear, probably at the end of this century its use will be even less. Beta16 (talk) 09:37, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
