Core namespaces, core plural messages
Check core namespaces and check core plural messages are displayed as untranslated for ar although that their translations exist in software. Please fix this. --Meno25 19:49, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Same problem with the hu messages, it's probably an error in the extension. --Dani (bdanee) vita 23:35, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- These extensions are not general purpose. Please ignore them. Siebrand 00:08, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
New language
Please add Comorian ISO-639-3 swb locally Shikomoro as a language to be localised in MediaWiki. Thanks, GerardM 10:23, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

E-mail notification
Is it possible to make FuzzyBot (or any other bot) send an e-mail to users when: 1-there are new messages recently added by developers or 2-some messages are now fuzzy? The sent e-mail should specify the number of new/fuzzy messages. The subscription to this system should be of course optional. A similar functionality (I mean sending an e-mail by a bot) is done by CommonsDelinker. --Meno25 15:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- As we are very low on server resources, we will most probably not be adding any features in the near future. You can use the email alerts on your watchlist (see Special:Preferences). Cheers! Siebrand 17:20, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
New language xmf
Please add Mingrelian/Megrelian ISO-639-3 xmf locally მარგალური as a language to be localised in MediaWiki. Fallback language should be Georgian (ISO-639-3 kat). Thanks, Malafaya 13:41, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Lithuanian plural
Please update Lithuanian plural function to
function convertPlural( $count, $forms ) { if ( !count($forms) ) { return ''; } + //if no number with word, then use $form[0] for singular and $form[1] for plural or zero + if(count($forms) == 2) return $count == 1 ? $forms[0] : $forms[1]; $forms = $this->preConvertPlural( $forms, 3 ); if ($count%10==1 && $count%100!=11) return $forms[0]; if ($count%10>=2 && ($count%100<10 || $count%100>=20)) return $forms[1]; return $forms[2]; }
It will let use expressions where we need say if it is plural or singular. For example Category or Categories in the bottom of pages.

Fallback setting for jut/Jutish
Has the fallback language for Jutlandic been set to Danish? Ælsån 12:50, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- I can see "Messages in other languages" > "Danish (da)" above the edit form on http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=MediaWiki:Mainpage/jut&action=edit, so this has been set. But, you will not see it in the interface because it has been locally set. SPQRobin 12:57, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- Not any longer. 'jut' has been committed and 'da' has been set as fallback language. Siebrand 16:42, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

[gu]
ગુજરાતી (Gujarati)
- Please commit translations for gu - Gujarati (ગુજરાતી). Translations done on Betawiki are committed immididately on this site, but doesn't seem to be committed on gu.wiki, can you implement and once comitted, can you even let me know here? --Dhaval (ધવલ) 16:59, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

- Hi Siebrand, I read the contnet on the page youn had linked with your emssage, but couldn't understnd what you wanted to convey. I think you wanted to say that the system messages are localized on Gujarati wikipedia (gu.wiki), am I right? I even had that same doubt as I could see a local version of system messages here, but If that is the case, than may I request you to revert it back and keep the system messages linked to meta? as it is more convinienet to translate messages at one place and see them implemented everywhere rather than translating messages here on translatewiki for the projects and in local file for the local portal. Hope I could explain my query this time. If you need any further information, please contact me on my gujarati talkpage. Thank you...--Dhaval (ધવલ) 16:00, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
- (1) translations are made in Betawiki
- (2) translations are exported and committed to MediaWiki
- (3) downstream users update their MediaWiki software (Wikimedia is a downstream user)
- We have no control over the updates of downstream users. Usually Wikimedia updates at least every week. We very much advise against localisation in local wikis of Wikimedia, as this means that no one but the local community benifits from the effort. Cheers! Siebrand 16:12, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Siebrand, Thanks first of all for your replies here and on my gujarati talk page. But, I don't know where I am still failing to wxplain you what my main concern is. I agree with your point "We very much advise against localisation in local wikis...". But in gu.wikipedia.org it seems that this is the case, Can you anyhow help me reverting it back to Betawiki? I would even prefer to translate messages at Betawiki and see them implemented on all the projects (and have been doing so). My wuestion had nothign to do with wikimedia, my concern is with gu.wikipedia.org where the changes I made on betawiki are not implemented. It seems that at present, to see the messages changed on gu.wikipedia.org I need to correct Special:AllMessages on gu.wikipedia.org everytime, which I don't want to.
- In nutshell, can you advise me how do I see the translations done on Betawiki get implemented at gu.wikipedia.org? If you feel that I have failed explaining this time also, I must give up.--Dhaval (ધવલ) 10:15, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ah. I failed to understand what you meant before. The solution is to remove/delete the pages in the MediaWiki: namespace from gu.wikipedia. This will ensure that the standard message is used (without a local override, and updated automatically whenever the standard definition changes). To see the differences, you should use wikipedia:gu:Special:Allmessages. Depending on how many local overrides there are, this may be a lot of work... Cheers! Siebrand 11:12, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Siebrand, I checked MediaWiki:namespace here and to my surprise, the page is already deleted. So, according to you, in this case, the standard message (without local override) should be used. But thats not the case, in wikipedia:gu:Special:Allmessages at some places, it shows the messages locally translated and probably the ones on Betawiki. Will removing wikipedia:gu:Special:Allmessages help anyways?--Dhaval (ધવલ) 16:12, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- It’s simple; MediaWiki:Namespace/gu hasn't been added here. Jon Harald Søby 18:36, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Jon Herald and Siebrand, I have found a workaround, what I am doing now is removeing or reverting the changes made in wikipedia:gu:Special:Allmessages, by doing so, the translations committed on [[Betawiki:]] are retained on gu.wikipedia. Thanks once again.--Dhaval (ધવલ) 09:28, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Norröna - non
Please split Old Norse - non into:
non-latn
(Norrǿna)non-runr
(ᚿᚿᚢᚱᚢᚿᛆ)
M.M.S. 13:26, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- This makes sense, iff we want to have non as an interface language. It has been dead for centuries, and I really don't see a justifiable reason as to why we should have it as an interface language at all. I think we should remove it instead. Jon Harald Søby 13:38, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- Is Betawiki for Mediawiki or for Wikimedia? It is unlikely that a Norse localization will be useful for any Wikimedia project, but everybody is free to install Mediawiki and run his own wiki in whatever language he wants to. Shouldn't it be possible to do localization for that purpose on Betawiki too? --Slomox 14:39, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

- Do you need them all? --Nike 09:00, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe some users prefer the numeric-only date format, so I'd like to keep:
15 Καλαντάρτς 2001 | 2001-01-15 (Even better would be: 15-01-2001)

- Hi Max. There's no active project. Well, I'm not calling 1 page an active project. 1.500 community according to Ethnologue. The language has passed the access criteria (50% of most used), so technically it fulfills our requirement. User:M.M.S. shows no language skills in dlc. There is no native speaker, or anything close, to verify it. meta:Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:User_language/dlc is also only you. There you claim dlc-1. There is no project proposal on meta:Requests_for_new_languages. This appears to be a rogue incubator project to me. All this gives me little confidence in the asset this language would be. It will probably not be maintained or ever grow beyond the current localisation. Please clarify to me why this language should be added to the core product? Siebrand 17:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

- Done (Eastern is not part of this) mhr - Олык Марий - Сай 09:14, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
There is some problem with naming Mari dialects in English. According to ISO 639-3 mhr is Eastern Mari. In fact, Mari people call it Олык Марий, that translates to English as "Meadow Mari". Over a month ago, when I started to make translations on this language, in translation tool mhr was called Meadow Mari. Then someone had changed it to Eastern. Moreover, Meadow and Hill Mari(mrj in ISO 639-3) are the two biggest dialects, that have their alphabets. And there are two/three other smaller dialects. One of them is "Эрвел" that translates to English as Eastern. "Эрвел" dialect dosn't have it's own alphabet and it is very similar to "Олык". So in Russian we often say Meadow-Eastern alphabet and literature. In English, as I concerned Meadow Mari and Eastern Mari mean the same Олык Марий. I don't know why the authors of ISO 639-3 named them as Eastern and Western(while in fact they are Meadow and Hill). Сай 11:26, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

299 languges are missed from this list - Сай 09:14, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- 299 languages are missing from which list? Why should they be present before there is a translator? Do you speak all '299 missing languages'? What is your point exactly? Cheers! Siebrand 09:43, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
- 299 is the difference between the number of languages in "My prefereces/Language" list and the number of languages in "Translation tool/Language" list. If there is no translator for some language then why this language is present in Translation tool? If it is the principle of translatewiki.net then I don't mind. But I was a little bit confused about that. Сай 11:26, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- Localisation are only added to MediaWiki whenever a language has at least 50% of the most often used core messages translation. If that is one out of the 299 languages that are present in CLDR but not yet in MediaWiki, we will add it. Until then, we are not adding useless language entries without localisations to MediaWiki. Cheers! Siebrand 19:47, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- Does MediaWiki mean "My preferences/Language" list? When I registered at translatewiki.net I changed language of the interface to mhr, then I have changed it to ru and now I can't change it back to mhr. This is the problem. When I have registered, mhr had 0% of translation, but I changed the interface language to mhr. And now when mhr has 20% of most used messages translated I can't change interface language to mhr. I (and other translators too) should have ability to change interface language to the language that I am translating to see the result of translation in real time. And what does CLDR mean? be-x-old
When you localise, there is the option to localise be-x-old and be-tarask. These are the same and it is more polite to show the be-tarask. The fact that the wikipedia is called be-x-old is to indicate that we should have only one project in the Belarus language. GerardM 06:24, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Interlingua
I am a translator for Interlingua, which is a simplified and modernized international Latin derived primarily from English and the major Romance languages. I noticed that when you edit a message in Swedish, the existing translations for Norwegian and Danish (which are closely related) are shown as well for convenience. My request is to similarly show the existing translations for French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese when an Interlingua message is edited. – McDutchie 21:07, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Interlingua "regional" settings
There are a few settings for number and date notation that need to be defined for Interlingua (ia). I've read Translating:Regional_settings but the documentation on how I could do it myself isn't there. So, if possible, please:
- change the thousands separator from a comma to a non-breaking space (
); - change the decimal separator from a period to a comma;
- in the long D-M-Y date format, insert the word "de" (of) before the month -- example: "26 de julio 2008". (This is often preceded by the definite article ["le 26 de julio 2008"] but that is usually part of the messages themselves and so shouldn't be part of the date format.)
Thanks – McDutchie 18:17, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- Changed everything else but date format. Ia doesn't have any own date formats defined at the moment, and I suppose the default ones are not optimal. – Nike 13:31, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Old Norse - non
Please (re)add Old Norse - non (Norrǿnt mál), a Wikisource in Old Norse has been requested and I will translate into it. It should be split in two scripts:
non-latn - Old Norse (latin) - Norrǿnt mál
non-runr - Old Norse (runic) - ᚾᚢᚱᚱᚢᚾᛏ ᛘᛅᛚ
M.M.S. 09:24, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- It is a historical language. Localisation in it will not be required by the language committe. It will not be re-added. I also suggest that you will request a more appropriate setting for wgLang if the wiki is ever to be created, as your intended audience will not be speakers of Old Norse, but those interested in source documents in Old Norse. So this request is denied. Please direct any opposers in the Wikimedia language committee to me, and/or refer to this message first. Cheers! Siebrand 23:50, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
