"Translators can translate on this website. This right is now given by default to new users after translating text in a sandbox"

What does this mean? Where is this mysterious "sandbox"? --Surfo (talk) 07:50, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Surfo (talk)07:50, 31 August 2018

It just means a temporary space. We can write "temporary space" instead (is this just in the page or also in the interface?).

Nemo (talk)15:16, 6 September 2018

I got no sandbox. Where can I find this sandbox? There should be a link to the sandbox.

New registration process

What shall we do with translator requests that are still brought in on Project:Translator?

\m/etalhead 14:44, 21 December 2013

Handle them as usual. Note that Special:FirstSteps has some bugs if a new user tries to mix the old process with the new and perhaps in other cases too.

Nemo (talk)14:47, 21 December 2013

Okay, thanks.

\m/etalhead 14:53, 21 December 2013

Thanks for the work in these months! It has paid off, we're still getting several additional useful translators and editors this way. Challenged by Nike, I made a list out of curiosity: some have over 500 edits. The others are usually users asking new languages or projects, who can't contribute yet (usually addition of a new language or project takes 6-12 months).

Niharika29, Јелена_Продановић, Cvanca, Egofer, Yona_b, Venky2834, Jrobell, Arent, BASAbali, Msannakoval, Andru, Jskang, Manohisoa, Khairnar.mangesh, Phidrho, Menachem.Moreira , M!dgard, Kening_Aldgilles.

Now we also have some edit count data in addition to the manual data above: thanks Nike for the query, it's always lovely to have some data about translatewiki.net. It is rougher than a "useful editors" classification Nike had suggested, but it shows that about 30 % of newly active contributors (registered this year and with more than 10 edits) still come from the standard registration process. Of course we can't know what they would have done otherwise.

It's nice that we were able to take the best from both worlds, people liking wizards and people looking for the standard registration. :)

Proposed amendment of wording of translator request

On making a request for translator rights, the prefilled text in the edit box is "I would like to help translating from English to...". Can we delete "from English" please?

Lloffiwr13:23, 26 June 2011

Why?

Nike13:49, 26 June 2011

Because it might discourage translators who might want to rely mainly on fallback languages for translation.

Lloffiwr13:53, 26 June 2011

It might, but on the other hand we are not ready supporting translators who don't speak English at acceptable level.
