Hi Biraj. Welcome to translatewiki.net!

You can now start translating.

You should also check the portal for your language, the link is in the sidebar. Other useful pages are linked in the menu next to this message.

Your translations are transferred to the standard product every few days or every few weeks, depending on the product. Please notice that it may take longer before you see your translation in the actual product.

We wish you a productive and pleasant stay. Please leave any questions on Support (the link is also available on any page, in the navigation sidebar). Cheers!

Translation of proper nouns

Hi Biraj, Thanks for all the translations. I do think that proper names should not be literally translated. For example, here: MediaWiki:Sp-translate-data-SkinNames/as‎. Thanks, wikichaipau@gmail.com 10:04, 23 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's for some cases

Hi Chaipau, thanks for indicating the points. But in some cases it can be translated. This is applicable to the words (Proper Nouns) for which অসমীয়া words are vastly used. But in some cases a transliteration is more informative than a translation. However, I deeply concern about the Hindi and Bengali words present in the http://as.wikipedia.org.

Even though some proper nouns have widespread translations in Assamese, they are still proper nouns. Nevertheless, if a proper noun has widespread use, we should use the used terms. For example, "markin juktorastro" or "proxanto mohaxagor". But for names like "Classic" or "MonoBook", which are names of themes in wikipedia, they should probably retain their original form, but in Assamese script.
The Hindi in the http://as.wikipedia.org interface is due to a configuration issue. The fall back language has been set to Hindi. I have registered a bug for this to be rectified. Please look at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15670. You may register at the site and support the issue, to add weight.
As far as translation of the Assamese wikipedia articles are concerned, we have no choice but to translate them to Assamese. The best we can do is write bots to check and alter them. I was working on one to change all Bengali "ro" to Assamese ones, but I never finished doing it. I shall work on it again when I have the time.
A comment: I think the wikipedia interface should be fun, and not too formal. It is fine to sacrifice accuracy ones in a while for the sake for informality and fun. Also, I believe it should be colloquial. Something that "sounds" Assamese and not too Sanskrit or Hindi or Bengali. Just my thoughts.

Yes I do believe that words like CLASSIC, MONOBOOK should be kept as it is in Assamese script. But I am still not comfortable with the use of words like MODERN, SIMPLE etc. I think in this case there should be some guidelines. Otherwise it'll be always confusing whether one WORD (Proper Noun) should be translated or not. I am facing the same problem in [1]/[2] and as of now we have found out the solution by considering the most widely used words. It may be either in English transliterated or translated. Please, have a look for this link [3].

If Modern and Simple are proper names of themes, then they should retain their forms in Assamese script. They should not be translated. Just as the name Biraj is not translated in English, even though an English translation of the word exist. Best, Chaipau 04:23, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have also looked at the link: [4]. The situation here is not about using English words in Assamese usage, but the translation of proper names. For example, we may translate the word theme in Wikipedia, or leave it as it is in Assamese script. Other words that come to mind in this category are: browser, file, delete, edit, help, navigate, search, go, submit, etc. We may class them as "technical words" their use in Wikipedia should conform to the general use in Assamese. But as far as proper names are concerned, we have no choice but to retain them. Best, Chaipau 07:29, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Babel extension on translatewiki.net

Hoi, we are implementing the Babel extension on Betawiki. As Bangla is the fall back language to Assamese, you see its information in Bangla. You can help us and yourself by localising the Babel extension in your language. Thanks, GerardM 17:55, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi GerardM,
Thanks for pointing out the source of problem. I have already corrected those entries. A good polishing may be required to make it harmonious. Please, have a look for further mistakes.
