Babel extension on translatewiki.net
Hoi, we are implementing the Babel extension on translatewiki.net. Could you please help us by localising it for Veps ? Thanks, GerardM 17:20, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
OK, but I am new to Wikipedia and I can't find the Babel page. Could You help me, please? Игорь Бродский 19:51, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Малюсенький комментарий по языку (Pičukaine kommentarii keles :-)
I have to write in Russian, because every Veps speaks this language, while many vepsian computer terms are new and should be discussed by all means.
vep
Hi Igor. Great work on 'vep'. We are about to add it to MediaWiki pending a few things we need to sort out. We are verifying if what has currently been translated into 'vep' is indeed Veps. Another thing I would like to know is what fallback language we could configure for Veps. My thought would be Finnish, as the languages have a similar origin, and it has the same script as vep (as opposed to Russian). If no fallback language is selected, English will be used, which is probably not ideal. Please indicate which language code you would like to see used. Another thing is the translation of namespaces and special pages. This is something that can be done at It is not required, but it might be nice to work on that too. Cheers! OK. The users here can confirm that all made translations of MediaWiki staff are "veps". But, yes, we have to invite more people, then the work can look "verified" :) The problem is that really good knowledge of literary veps is very rear. My level is acheived only by a handfull of native speakers. I did not tuch yet the pages on the "vep"-Wikipedia in the Incubator. I see many incorrect teranslations there, so I have to edit all the texts, which will take some time, too. As a fallback language Finnish could be used, it's OK, though I prefere Estonian instead... I shall also try to translate things from here: Special:AdvancedTranslate. Thank You for watching :) Игорь Бродский 07:12, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, Estonian. I hadn't thought of that. One of the issues with Estonian is that the localisation level is low (59% for MediaWiki core). Why are you suggesting Estonian? Is it a logical fallback for vep speakers/readers, or just you native language? Any arguments are welcome. Geographical and language family reasons are both fine to me, but ultimately a language community should pick a fallback language that serves it best... Just convince me to pick one, and I'll probably take over your suggestion :) Siebrand 00:18, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, now I see... Well, if the localisation level for Estonian is too low, then the only solution is Finnish. Both Finnish and Estonian are in close genetical relations with Vepsian, but the literary form takes more from Estonian - that is why I prefere it. Any chances that Estonian MediaWiki will be localised better in the nearest future? Best regards, Игорь Бродский 10:55, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- Don't ask me if it will improve, ask the Estonian translators :) Siebrand 23:52, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
