[[Translating:WMCZ Web]]

Can you check the status of translations for the WMCZ web site ? There was a test website supposed to be working, but it is not accessible at all or is incorrectly setup.

As well the official website on wikimedia.cz does not support any other language than just Czech (natively for most contents) and English (for some contents).

Is this translation project still useful ? It seems that it has never been deployed, and the "live" test site has not even worked at all. As your propfile says you no longer work directly as an ambassador for WMCZ, it may be useful to say if this project is still supported in translatewiki.net, notably if the idea of translating this website in other languages has been in fact abandoned (without anyone maintaining it and no one to deploy the translations).

Thanks.

Hello User:Verdy p, my apologizes for the late reply, I totally missed this TWN message. Let me try to clarify the project's status. It indeed used to be deployed as a test/preview version at test.wikimedia.cz, but few months ago, it graduated to a production website – and moved to www.wikimedia.cz (while the old site is still available at old.wikimedia.cz, if you want to compare). I simply forgot to update the project page here. Just done!

WMCZ web is admittedly not the traditional TWN project. There are currently two types of texts that need to be translated in order for the site to be fully available in a different language:

  • content (ie. the pages you can read there), which is translated outside of Translatewiki (in the CMS running the site)
  • interface (ie. buttons you can click), which is translated via Translatewiki

This decision was made, because translation of content lives in the database, but translation of interface lives in the source code. I wanted to give more people the ability to manage the strings displayed there, and integrated the interface translation with TWN. That still works and is fully supported.

However, you are right that the website is currently available in Czech and English only. The reason for that is not technical – it happens, because the chapter does not translate the content to other languages than Czech and English. The moment anyone translates a page to any language the interface is translated to, it would obviously be visible.

By the way, my ambassadorship is actually not relevant to this project at all, it is relevant for the work of the WMF Growth team (and I still work with that Team :-)). Previously, WMF hired the chapter to do the ambassador work, which in turn hired me, and today, I work directly for the Foundation, without the chapter playing an active role anymore. In another words, the note on my userpage refers to a purely cosmetic legal change (the name of the payer changed, while the actual work done stayed the same). More details about that are available on my WMF user page at TWN or Meta.

I hope this all makes sense now. Let me know if not.
