Should this template include the categories for people that have contributed >2500 as well? I think that would make sense.

It's already like this, and Category:Translators with 2500 contributions doesn't contain anyone but user pages with this template, apparently. Perhaps I didn't understand you.

OK, let me clarify what I mean. Currently the template "Translators with 2500 contributions" containg only contributors with more than 2500, BUT less than 5000. And the same goes for "Translators with 5000 contributions", it contains contributors with more than 5000 and LESS than 10000.

My suggestion/questions is that "Translators with 2500 contributions" should contain every contributor with more than 2500 contributions. In other words, also the users with 5000 and 10000 contributions. And that "Translators with 5000 contributions" contain also the users from 10000.

This would be handy if someone wants to contact a user with say at least 5000 contributions and still get people with 10000. If you get what I am saying...

I believe this is easily achieved by adding the category for 5000 and 10000 in the template 2500, and adding the category 10000 in the template for 5000.

It's the opposite, you should add to this template all the categories containing "users with x contributions" where x < 2500. And no, it wouldn't make sense because it would clutter everything too much. But this is like babel templates, so we could make a single category with reversed order, see e.g. m:Category:User en.

I am still somewhat uncertain that you get what I am saying. Alice has 3000 contributions, Bob has 5600 contributions, and Eve has 17000. What I suggest is that "Translators with 2500 contributions" contains all three of these users. They all have at least 2500 contributions, so this makes sense. Next "Translators with 5000 contributions" should contain Bob and Eve, and "Translators with 10000 contributions" should only contain Eve. I don't see how this clutter things too much. Yes, the category with 2500 contributions-contributors would be very large, but that is how things is.

Translators with 2500 contributions

  • Alice
  • Bob
  • Eve

Translators with 5000 contributions

  • Bob
  • Eve

Translators with 10000 contributions

  • Eve

Another way of doing it could be to put in a link to the next category in "Translators with 2500 contributions". So it looks something like this:

Translators with 2500 contributions

  • Alice
  • Translators with 5000 contributions
  • Translators with 10000 contributions

Translators with 5000 contributions

  • Bob
  • Translators with 10000 contributions

Translators with 10000 contributions

  • Eve

Personally I would prefer to put all the users in this category instead of links (ie the first proposal in this reply)

Yes, I understand. What you want (in your example) is: Eve with 1 template, 3 categories; Bob with 1 template, 2 categories; Alice 1 template, 1 category.

Nemo19:03, 4 July 2011

Exactly. So what do you think? Should this be implemented or do you still think it will clutter things up too much? It is very easy to add the categories to the templates.

Nghtwlkr19:24, 4 July 2011

I still think it's too much clutter, that's why I commented that Nike's suggestion is the way to follow.

I think Semantic MediaWiki can be used to replace these categories partially or fully. It would be easy to modify the templates to add new property which includes how many edits the user has made. I don't think the actual edit count adding can be automated yet though.

Right.
