  • Portal:oj for the macrolanguage.
  • see related portals for individual languages (in the "See also" section): only Portal:Ciw is enabled for now.

Add language to translate

Hello, Admin. How can add the language to translate to English?

Rul1902 (talk)23:03, 27 August 2018

I am not an admin, but https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T203908 exists

Please, could you remove that some languages which are no longer supported are possibly be fixed to be allowed again? We have spent about 1 year trying to get the gothic interface opened up again so that all these horrible mistakes can be corrected and everything can be converted to Gothic unicode, but even if we want to fix previous errors it doesn't get opened up again and languages like Old English are allowed to have an interface, but these should be removed too if Gothic can't have one for being an old language. I observe increasing discrimination against our Gothic community here on wikipedia, we aren't treated equal as the Latin and Old English wikipedias.

Gothicspeaker (talk)16:27, 14 December 2015

Did you think about having both a Latin transcription and the Gothic UNICODE version?

I cannot promise that they would be accepted, but you can try to submit your changes via gerrit and git. That means, for MediaWiki to alter the source file:

according to the new message base:

and submit a patch.

If that is too technical and/or beyond your capabilities, please approach me again - e-mail welcome - there may still be an option.

This could be a possible solution Blissenbach, I could work on it well without the translation tool with which it takes a lot of time to correct one thing. This could be a solution. What does Siebrand think about it? Maybe we szhould remove all the current translations in the meantime, they're crappy and I don't want to spend time corrdcting them, I 'd rather do it from scratch.

Gothicspeaker (talk)15:37, 26 January 2016

No need to remove them since an update overrides them anyways. Btw. there is no need to do all in one go. Updates in reasonable batches will do, too.

I replaced it by portal:als, is this okay for you?

I have drafted a new help page, Translatewiki.net languages, for review and improvement. I am hoping that this page would form part of the translatewiki.net help and documentation, if it is good enough. It is mainly a collection of things already on FAQ and other places drawn together into one page. What do you think?

Lloffiwr (talk)19:41, 22 October 2011

Nice! Did you plan this to be linked from Special:SupportedLanguages?

Two-letter codes are preferred over three-letter codes, if both exist and are equivalent.

Nike (talk)19:52, 22 October 2011

I thought that maybe this page could be linked from:

  • Special:SupportedLanguages
  • Project:About - in the last point of the 'Overview of translatewiki.net method', possibly linking at the text 'new language' or changing the existing link at 'fallback language'. I'm not sure what is best given that the page is already set up for translation.
Lloffiwr (talk)21:42, 22 October 2011

There is nothing special in translatable pages, except changing them generates work for translators :)

Nike (talk)14:21, 8 November 2011

Yes, I agree, it is best not to change pages already set up for translation. That is why I thought that it might be possible to change the existing link at 'fallback language', without changing the text. Would it be possible to change the link using a bot, so that there is no extra work for translators?

If neither of my suggestions are very satisfactory, it doesn't matter; I'm sure we'll find a good place for this page eventually.

Lloffiwr (talk)22:00, 11 November 2011

I have changed the link on Special:SupportedLanguages from Translating:Process to Translatewiki.net_languages. The link is on the site-specific summary and so it is only visible to visitors who have English as their interface language. Is there a way to make this visible to others?
